Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Mar 25, 2011 12:37 pm Just after some feedback on this renovation design. The house atm has Existing cathedral ceiling with exposed 240x45 oregon rafters with a 290x90 ridge beam. Pine lining boards as ceiling cladding between rafters. im proposing to clad the existing rafters and ridge beam with recycled messmate timber skins 19mm thick and adding in fake collar ties to create an industrial feel. Together with concrete benchtops to kitchen, exposed stainless chimney cooktop flues, exposed aluminium A/C ducting and slightlymilled recycled messmate timber floorboards (tung oil finish with dark stain). Do you think it is a bit much? too much happening? or does it work well all together? Re: Renovation Living/Kitchen/Dining Design 2Mar 25, 2011 1:48 pm I think it looks great. If was to change something i might think about painting the exposed aircon tube/pipe. Maybe to a white or even something bolder, like a red. That way i could put more money and detail into the kicthen. thinking of also making up one of those rolling library ladders against the gable end to the living room above windows (opposite end to kitchen not shown in 3d image) and incorporating some wine storage with access from operable ladder. Ladder out of recycled messmate timber aswell? Re: Renovation Living/Kitchen/Dining Design 5Mar 25, 2011 2:15 pm I like it! The only thing I can think of is that the ceiling area then automatically becomes a feature so any furniture and artwork has to be able to "compete" with it or it would get lost. Just like the art in your picture - that is bright and bold and draws attention back down again from the ceiling. If you are a really messy family so much busy-ness in the ceiling will add to the clutter too making it look even more messy. ETA: I wouldn't want to be the one dusting it, either! Re: Renovation Living/Kitchen/Dining Design 6Mar 25, 2011 2:19 pm KB46 - totally understand your perspective. although the only feature would be the beams. everything else in the design excluding the flooring and artwork but including the kitchen joiney is sterile white. FYI we are a pretty sterile family. hate clutter. am after a minimalist look. Develepor - Was a quick render in Revit Architecture Software. The materials etc arent spot on but it was a quick render to give the main impression. Re: Renovation Living/Kitchen/Dining Design 7Apr 05, 2011 3:57 pm Blacky I'd be a bit worried about climbing up a ladder to get to the wine. After a few drinks could be a bit dangerous. I have always loved those things though (the ladder that is, wine too), maybe a largish bookcase with lots of books would look good. Re: Renovation Living/Kitchen/Dining Design 8Feb 13, 2012 7:51 am Hey Guys, Finally got around to finishing that reno based on the design of that early rendered image. Didnt vary too much from original design. Didnt end up angling that artwork wall which in turn made kitchen a little smaller. Also didnt go through with Exposed Air con ducting through center or the random ceiling timbers. Just thought i would post for anyone interested in how it turned out. The lights look great and accentuate the high celing. I noticed the artwork is the same as the drawing - did you have that before the reno? Re: Renovation Living/Kitchen/Dining Design 12Feb 17, 2012 11:12 am Yea pretty wrapped with how it all turned out. definately a completely different transformation from what it was originally. Yes the artwork was a custom sprayed aeresol piece. i had that idea in my head from the start. i wanted to achieve a stained glass window effect to relate back into the warehouse/church feel that i was going for.
