Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Mar 11, 2011 12:01 pm Hi all, I live in a 60 y.o fibro home that's made from hardwood with wall joists ~30cm apart. I use that opening line because this house is solid as a rock. But, its really small. I'm looking at extending my home and I've recently been thinking about plans. My current thinking is to build into the roof (i.e. attic) for at least part of the extension (master bedroom + ensuite?). The roof pitch is unusually high; so the top of my single storey house is as high as the two-storey next door. Anyway, what I need to know is this: - If I extend up into the roof i'm going to need to put in a structural floor. What does this actually involve and how much of the already extremely solid structure in my house is going to count toward this if anything at all? - Also, if I were to replace my tiled roof with colorbond at the same time, would there be any cost savings involved in this process? Thanks in advance to all those who can help! teamfowler Re: Thoughts on extending into attic + re-roof. 2Mar 14, 2011 6:01 pm Teamfowler, are you owner building? If so, I would get the advice of a builder on your roof structure for sturdiness. Nice idea going up into the roofline with your reno, but it needs to be checked first. Either way, relo's are builders so intention is to check with them on everything. By the way, has anyone replaced a roof recently? We probably will re-roof at least (i.e. get rid of the fast-decaying tiles and replace with colorbond), but i'm wondering whether we'll just get a whole new roof. If we do, that would mean we'd need an old-style roof (don't know the name?) instead of a truss-roof. Anyway just wondering if anyone knows of replacement roof prices particularly for the non-truss style that you can build into. Cheers from the team. Re: Thoughts on extending into attic + re-roof. 4Jun 30, 2011 5:28 am Hi Teamfowler, Wanted to see if you got any additional information. We are looking into doing a similar thing with our brick and tile house of about 17 squares rather than extending out. Unlike you thought the current roof is not high enough so we need to replace the whole roof (tiles, trusses etc) with a new roof that would allow us to then build up into the roof space. Like you we are looking for any ideas on costs to do this and also any advice regarding requirements so any advice you or others may have would be very much appreciated.
