I'd love to see what you've done to it. We doubled the size back in the 80s it now needs renovating again mind you the beauty of having verandahs, the house paint is nearly as good as new, but the verandah needs redoing We put in french doors and windows which was a mistake, we were young and doing up old houses back then was not popular, it was hard to source materials even very difficult to buy bullnose verandah roofing - which is probably lucky as we may have done that and it would have been wrong for the house. It brings back memories seeing your pictures, sort of similar to our place even the colours! My advice is keep as much original detail & character as possible - don't remove the transom windows, fireplaces etc unless really necessary. You can still have all the mod cons with an older house Unless of course you hate all of that and want a modern looking home I will follow your journey with interest! Re: Little old country house renovation 22Feb 13, 2011 3:26 pm I like hogs, esp with white trim/ windows Re: Little old country house renovation 24Feb 14, 2011 5:57 pm Thanks all. I'm probably leaning towards the Hogs but I might mix up the 1/2 and 1/4 to see what they look like. DH went down to Melbourne a couple of weeks ago to pick up our fence kit. Victorians seem to have so many more period-style options down there. There were heaps of places dedicated soley to picket fences in Vic - couldnt find one in NSW. So we went with a fence kit - Went with a 'rise and fall' style with the recessed gate. I've had my brother spray it with undercoat. DH just needs to put it together. Would of loved the cast iron capitals but they would of added another $600 to the bill. I'm thinking if I go for the hogs bristle for the house - the fence pickets either white or hogs 1/4 and the plinth and posts hogs full strength. Might add a little woodlands grey (roof colour) to the post caps. Let me know what you think and if you have any picket fence pics that would be great! We met with the gyprocker on Saturday. As the house is double brick he told us we need a renderer to come in before he can start. They are as rare as hen's teeth here. We found one who mostly does the exterior of new homes in Orange. He can slot us in if they get rain in Orange this week - so I'll be praying for rain in Orange! Re: Little old country house renovation 26Feb 18, 2011 10:40 pm Well, the rendering is finished inside and the floorboards on the back verandah have been taken up. Jobs for next week, all going to plan, will be plumbing to the new laundry, floor and framing for laundry, replacing verandah posts and new floor in dining area (where old bathroom was taken out). We're going to have a look around plaster places tomorrow to choose cornice. I think we'll be having the 90mm 'Sydney' ClassicCove in the bedrooms, bath, laundry and we'll pick a 150mm cornice for the hall and living area. The ClassiCove is a paper cornice and the plasterer said is cheaper to buy and install. I hope it looks OK with the 10' ceilings. I want a Victorian arch in the hallway - still fighting for that one. I just think it would suit the house and be a nice first impression on entering. Re: Little old country house renovation 28Feb 20, 2011 11:33 am Wow, what a huge undertaking. Can't wait to see the end result Building an Eden Brae Saville 27 http://karry327.blogspot.com/ Building thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=44247 Re: Little old country house renovation 29Feb 20, 2011 12:57 pm g'day trish, you seem to be moving along nicely - WELL DONE MATE!!! as for the old pic - what an awesome pic - it's obviously the rear of the house, as there is no front door on that pic. Also, I notice the old boards on the old pic, whereas your property is bricked up and painted. Just so lucky, I wish a previous owner would give us a pic! The best we can get is the old pub next door (that is now demolished anways!) With colours, I'm sure I'm going full strength hogs bristle. Remember i'm heritage listed, so I'm somewhat restricted. My archs etc have to be either burgandy or dark green, and that's it!!! no compromise for heritage homes I'm afraid. If I had my way tho, I'd still go hogs bristle full strenth, but simply with white trim everywhere. They do homes like this all over Williamstown and they are spectacular every time - it's a no fail approach to older style homes. Basically, let the architecture talk. I get that, but the bloody heritage officer in my area doesn't get it - Gooses! anyways, can't wait to see your place get fixed up. !! A thankful person is a happy person. Yes, should of called first but we had a family bday over there anyway - so we went to Bunnings and Recollections instead. Hubby's gone down today to do a clean up. The tip wanted to charge $35 a ute load cause it was building waste. I think we'll let the builders clean up their own rubbish from now on (that was in the contract but the mess was annoying us). He just called and had been talking to a bloke - organising the removal of those ugly sheds up the back and the old tank. Annietom - I went across and bought the fence paint this morning. For the house we have gone for Full strength hogs for the walls and Antique white USA for the trim so I was really glad when you said you had seen it done and they look good cause I havent seen that combination. For the fence we are doing Antique white USA for the pickets and hogs for the posts, plinth and mail box. The photo of the old house is not ours - it was a photo and letter sent to Trish. I'd love someone to send us something like that too! Floor is finished 31Feb 24, 2011 3:14 pm Well the roof is almost finished - just the gutters to go. BIL who is a builder came over yesterday and did the floorboards where the fireplace and bathroom had been. Looks good. I dont mind the rustic/farmhouse look of the joins in the floor. He also replaced the verandah posts along the front and side. DH is down with the plumber at the moment so hopefully he can do the plumbing for the laundry next week. So much to do - but I suppose if you tackle one thing at a time it all gets done. Congratulations on doing your bit to save an old house that would probably have fallen down eventually if no-one had decided to give it a bit of TLC For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Little old country house renovation 37Apr 11, 2011 1:52 pm Hello, I love the house you are doing up. You are going to have so much fun, plus a few headaches. I have only just finished my own renovation here in NZ. I saw you were asking about paint colours and thought I might add my 5c. I actually like the earthier colour of the Hog Bristle, however would go with 1/2 or 1/4, with an off white trim. kind wishes for your renovation Re: Little old country house renovation 38Apr 12, 2011 3:46 pm Have I said something wrong?. I am not sure why I have recieved this email, please enlighten me. I have certainly not intended to upset anyone. Was this warning I recieved from the moderator of this forum Re: Little old country house renovation 39Apr 12, 2011 4:45 pm your post is fine who sent you the email. Re: Little old country house renovation 40Apr 15, 2011 9:30 pm sounds amazing, we did a nice reno to one of our investment places, we painted the cottage a grey colour with white window frames and shutters, a house with old character is so much better than these modern boxes!
