Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Aug 27, 2024 12:31 pm I have a deck that I am replacing - The joists meet the bearers at the same level, and there are currently multigrips holding the joists to the bearers on just one side. I cannot see if nails are also back embedded from the bearer to the joist until I remove the deck covering however I guess yes. Regardless I would like to be at standards (code) on what is there, and not simply repeat what is there. I am trying to price this up and I am stumped on the best way to fix the joists in place as they meet the bearers at 45deg. If it was a 90deg join I would support them with joist hangers and nail through the back of the bearer, because of the angle I cannot use joist hangers, and I cannot put multigrips on BOTH sides of the joist as fixing the closed 45deg angle makes it nearly impossible to hammer in the fixings. The options I can think of are that I could screw the closed angle side some of the way, but fixing at the top of the multigrip would be impossible. I was also thinking I could pass 2x long gal bolts through the bearer and then through the joist at the opposite 45deg as the joist is on, and bring them together that way and nail the back of the bearer. Wondering what is best standards/code practice here? Any help appreciated. Re: Joining joists to bearers at 45degree angle - at same level where no joist hanger can work 2Aug 27, 2024 5:32 pm You can fix the joists to bearer with 45 degree and 45 degree acute steel angle brackets. It is replacing same dimension oregeon with TP MGP10 - hopefully there is an angle bracket that would do a 45 degree that is a bit more cost effective then $14 each as I would need 50 odd of them plus the coach bolt - but would any heavy duty 45 degree bracket work here with coach bolts? Have you considered fixing a 50x50 galv angle along the bottom of the bearer to act as a ledger for the joists to sit on and then just bugle screwing the joists to the bearer? At 240mm you have plenty of face to get 4 bugles screwed in and cutting on the 45⁰ gives you almost 65mm of face contact between the joist and bearer. Lot's of guys would just nail it with the framing gun and then screw it with bugles. If you add the 50x50 angle bolted to the bearer then the joists can't drop over time and the bugles will keep everything tight.
