Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jul 18, 2024 5:02 am I have a new Canadian Ash front door and frame. I need some advice. Can i coat Feast Watson ‘Exterior Stain and Varnish’ (FW) (turps based) over a clear turps based clear varnish? You may have a better solution so let me describe the problem. I used fw on my door frames after Sand Sealer coating. Not too bad but not easy to coat without dribbles sags abd drags as the product tacked iff within minutes. Because the stain is the varnish it is very difficult for me to get a nice even results without streaks. So i decided not to use it on the door and attempted to match the product with Feast Watson spirit based proof tint. Bad idea! FW don’t offer the same tint as the stain and varnish product. So I proof sealed the door. Stained to as close a colour as i could with a mix of Tints and vanished with 2 coats of clear (turps based). It looks terrible. The color did not match the frame at all because my test piece were quite more grainy than my door panels. The varnish coat is not flat as it seems the varnish did not level out completely. Problem: uneven varnish finish… when varnishing a glass panel insert door there are opposing panel grains whenever i run the brush carefully along one panel following grain, the other I get a ridge. Applying n 2 directions takes care and time which i don’t have before it tacks off. Like minutes! The varnish does not level enough as it sets. Can I use any additive or technique to help?? Problem: wrong colour… I am considering overcoating the (stained and varnished) door with the original fw stain and varnish combo to get the right colour back but risk the streaky issue again!? Whats worse !! Can I spray this product more successfully? Can I extend the tack off time with an addictive? BUT the main n question is: can I use the turps based ‘Fw stain and varnish’ OVER the turps based clear after a light levelling sand, so that I don’t have to sand it all back to bare ( glass panel beading is a nightmare to sand). ?? Been weeks of nightmare trials and errors. Thanks for listening. Any tips?
