Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 May 30, 2024 4:28 pm Hi all, new to this forum. I need some advice on what is the process and how much it should cost to widen an entry doorway. The current door size is 820mm and I want to change it to a wider entryway to fit a double door or a door with sidelights. There is space to fit in a wider door but there is one light switch inside where the wall needs to be demolished for widening. I know I would need the council's permission and a plan drawn by building surveyor or an engineer. Also the doorway might need a wider lintel to support the extra weight? Please advice on how much total cost I am looking at. How much the building surveyor would charge, plus the cost of the door (for a HMR composite door) and the actual construction & labour charges. I want a completely finished job. Also, how many days of work will this be? The house is in the western suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. Thanks! Re: Widening of front entrance doorway 4Jun 14, 2024 4:44 pm ![]() Brick Veneer I would find a local carpenter or two in your area and get a quote. You will need someone who has the ability to saw cut your bricks and install a new lintel above your door, then widen your frame and install a new jamb and door. As a guess I think you will be looking at somewhere between $5,000 to 7,000 depending on what door and hardware you choose. You might also need a painter to do some touch ups.
