Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 May 07, 2022 12:30 am So, not only do we suddenly have an issue with our sparky over charging (for our kitchen reno), but our builder/carpenter/joiner (friend of a friend's) has left us with a half finished job and is now not contactable. We paid him for all his labour to date, plus $4k for materials to make the cabinet shells in his workshop. He has brought in 30% of them, but either hasn't made the others, or has made them but has failed to bring the rest. It has been a month since we saw him and have learned that he had a barney with his wife and son and has had to move out of his home. We have also learned that he has other clients he owes money to for materials paid in advance. We know his home address and my friend has contacted his wife who thinks she saw some cabinets in the back yard workshop. The guy was unlicensed but claims he was insured. He has a temper and may be dangerous, so wondering about our options. My "friend" says he will try to recover the cabinets for us, but to kiss goodbye the money advanced for the rest. What does one do in this position? And why are so many tradies so dishonest?
