Hi all, first time posting here so hope this is the right place.
I'm looking at removing 2 windows from our house and replacing them with walls. The idea is that we should get better sound insulation with an insulated solid wall, and it's cheaper than double glazing. I'm wanting to complete the work myself to save more $.
I'm looking for advice on what to look for / how to prepare?
Is this something that can be done in a day with 2 blokes?
This is the plan I had in my head:
1. Remove the window frame intact. These are simple steel frames secured with screws I think. Any advice on how to remove windows intact would be much appreciated.
2. Jimmy out the painted wood paneling around the frame. Try to minimise damage to drywall but plan to repair damage later.
3. Cut and nail in a new frame into the window hole using pine 90x35 or 90x45. This depends on the dimensions inside the wall.
4. Put uprights in about 50mm apart depending on the space available.
5. Staple sarking on the outside part.
6. Nail cladding on the outside over the sarking. How do I ensure that rain will not seep into the cracks between the existing cladding, and the new cladding? I'm not sure if I can get the sarking to cover the existing parts as well.
7. Stuff the cavity with sound reducing insulation.
8. Install drywall.
9. Go to pub and enjoy an earned beer.
Any advice is well appreciated.
