Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jun 20, 2012 1:26 pm Hi all, This is my first post and I've been reviewing some previous post and found it to be a useful guide as some of the comments have really helped. We have recently purchased a property and would like to do some work on it. We would like your help on: 1) External Rendering of the House. I have attached some pictures below. What is the rough price for Rendering the front of the house versus the whole house? What colour schemes do you recommend? and what type of render materials should be used? We also like to do rendering of the interior as my wife doesn't like the outdated look and feel. We were wondering the difference between rendering vs plasterboard. We believe some walls around the house has used plasterboard but we do not know how to check this. Could you advise the rough cost to this mini project and also the materials? Do we still need to paint on top of the render? A stab in the dark on price, but you would be looking at about $45 sqm for render. I think plaster would be a fair bit cheaper. What I would do if you dont know anyone, is drive round a new estate close by and see if a renederer or 2 will come and price it for you. Do the same with plasterers. Cheers Re: Render or Plaster ? 3Jun 20, 2012 6:00 pm Our house has a combination of render and plasterboard. Render is used in the majority of rooms (because that is how WA does things), with plasterboard being used to cover bulkheads. In the case where plasterboard meets a wall, the wall will be covered in plasterboard as well to reduce the likelyhood of cracks appearing. When I knock on the wall with plasterboard it has a more hollow sound than rendered walls (render is a cement like coating covered in plaster, so there is no air between the layers). I think the rendered walls feel a bit cooler too, but that could just be me. I would always go render because thats what I know and suspect that it is harder and more durable than plasterboard. Whether you render or use plasterboard make sure you have the metal edging on all corners so that you get a crisp edge. If you were to DIY, plasterboard may be the go because you could do all the sticking and cutting yourself. You would just need to skim the joins between the boards with plaster (I have noticed our boards are laid horizontally so there are less joins). Re: Render or Plaster ? 4Jun 20, 2012 7:27 pm Thank you both for the comments. It has been very helpful. We received initial quotation for rendering. Quotes came back with a huge spread. Range from 3,000 - 10,000. Does anyone have any ideas on the warranty related to rendering? And the types of materials I should go with for rendering.
