Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jan 15, 2014 1:13 pm A bit dramatic, yes but no less true. We have recently purchased a house which has no ceiling space. Love the asthetic of it but now that we want to renovate, it's less great. We were planning on getting the roof replaced and an electrician advised that any wiring we want done needs to be done when the roof is off. Is that correct? This also got me thinking that we wanted skylights and a vent in the bathroom installed. Would these also have to be done at the same time as the roof? Can common 3in1 vents be installed in this kind of ceiling/roof with the vent going to the outside of the house instead of inside the roof cavity? Is there anything else I should be aware of? My concern is that instead of these things being done over the course of a few years, all need to be done in one hit. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Re: Renovating with no roof/ceiling space - DEAR GOD HELP 2Jan 15, 2014 1:45 pm I guess you plan ahead - get the weather check - forecast - and hope its right. Rent some roof protection - something that can cover the roof. AND - make sure the electrician is there on time and knows exactly what to do. Planning will be key alright. A real production line technique. Re: Renovating with no roof/ceiling space - DEAR GOD HELP 3Feb 14, 2014 10:32 am Yep - we have a flat roof and got fans put in last year in 4 rooms, new lights, proper grounding of electrics, power points etc. Ripped the whole roof off and put it on again the same day. Sparky is a mate so luckily didn't charge for that time and let my husband help. Definitely plan ahead and get it all done at once. We forgot about adding a plug behind the TV ... Re: Renovating with no roof/ceiling space - DEAR GOD HELP 4Feb 14, 2014 10:52 am As the others have said and I'll add that you can remove some of the sheets to let the sparky do his stuff beforehand. Most sheets have 10-15 screws holding them down so easy to remove and re-fix temporarily. That way you won't have guys standing around or be reliant on everyone turning up exactly when you want them to. If you have a hire place in the area you can always whip down and hire a few tarps for a couple of days as well. I'd also install the skylight with any necessary timber trimmers etc in place before so it is exactly where you want it and not because it is convenient for the roofers. The fan can be done after. Stewie Thank you @ashington Homes for your reply! They just got back to me and offered credit for me to just take it as is.
