Browse Forums Safer Living 1 Jul 25, 2012 10:33 am Hi, I had my hot water system stolen on the weekend. It was a small gas instant system. What ideas do you all have to keep the replacement one secure? Security ideas? 2Jul 25, 2012 10:54 am That's awful! Was it accessable by your back garden? Do you have a locked gate or did they jump the wall. Have you thought about getting a 'Beware of the dog' sign? (Cheaper than a dog....) Security ideas? 3Jul 25, 2012 12:40 pm Yep, I had a locked gate but they managed to bend the gate post just enough to push the gate 'tongue' under the latch. So I definitely need to fix the gate somehow, but I was after ideas for securing the hot water system itself. I know you can get cages for them but I'm not sure if I can buy a ready-made one or need to make one myself. Anyone? 23 Aug 2011: Land settlement 14 Sep 2011: Block levelled 20 Oct 2011: Slab 3 Nov 2011: Frame 10 Feb 2012: Handover http://s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g372/Dazzab6/ Re: Stolen hot water system. But future thieves might come with spanner in hand, so I'll look into it. 23 Aug 2011: Land settlement 14 Sep 2011: Block levelled 20 Oct 2011: Slab 3 Nov 2011: Frame 10 Feb 2012: Handover http://s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g372/Dazzab6/ Re: Stolen hot water system. Security ideas? 7Oct 03, 2012 11:37 pm one of my builders last 30 in one night, doesn't matter if you are living in the house or not they still rip them off. At times when we have been called back to replace them they have cut our pipes but haven't got it out as we screw them in pretty good. The one's that are installed in a recess Box don't get ripped off as much as the ones only bolted on the wall. Re: Stolen hot water system. That's crazy! Is installing it inside an option? Like in the garage or laundry for example? Good idea, but can someone advise on the legality of installing it inside? I'm sure it's feasable (at least for me, as I haven't built yet), but what about the legality? I have already included an internal stairwell in my design (think extra laundry/storage with a staircase) to get on the 7 meter high roof, and it would be sweet if I could place it there. Re: Stolen hot water system. Security ideas? 12Oct 06, 2012 11:08 pm I hadn't really considered that. Do you mean that the gas company would need access? Security ideas? 14Oct 06, 2012 11:11 pm internal - well storage yes if its flued & above ground level to comply with gas rules, as for cont.hws don't know not sure if its been done or even if they make them. Can't put an external hws inside unless its classified as such. Re: Stolen hot water system. Can't put an external hws inside unless its classified as such. I'¨ll buy the proper tank etc. suited for the application. It will be on the ground level - no basement - and it will be installed by a plumber. I'm having a solar heater (evacuated tubes) with a gas booster. That's the plan, anyway. Sorry for being this daft, I'm a Dane, living in Denmark, and trying to get everything considered before building down there, so I don't have to deal with bolt-on solutions, patches for flaws in the design etc. Re: Stolen hot water system. Security ideas? 19Oct 06, 2012 11:28 pm rosewood a storage hws above ground level & flued but not a cont.hws it designed for to be installed externally. Okay, that sounds good. So not a problem for my choice then. It's a shame (for the OP and others) that you have to have the cont. HWS on the outside with very little protection from theft. I guess another solution would be to build an open shed of sorts, with a little roof, and have it open to the outside. I mean, sort of using planks as cladding but leave every other plank out so it ventilates well. Oh, and have the frame of the shed built by steel, and have a great big padlock on it. Yeah, I'm running out of ideas Re: Stolen hot water system. Security ideas? 20Oct 06, 2012 11:39 pm I have mine recessed but this is done before the brickwork. it doesn't happen to every house so don't think we have country full of people knocking off hws heaters.
