Browse Forums Safer Living 1 Jul 09, 2012 2:45 pm Hi all We moved into our new house late last year and we love our front door - it's a Corinthian Madison, with narrow horizontal glass panels and stained dark oak. The sidelights have the same frame. The door directly faces the street, and we didn't feel a security door was required, because of the visibility and all our living areas are at the back, so this door would be closed all the time. Famous last words, someone smashed in the door and robbed the house three weeks ago. The entire door/sidelight unit has to be replaced, and I can't in all conscience not install a security door and side panels (in all likelihood it won;t happen again, but I think I've taken enough chances. And it turns out our neighbour has been robbed 5 times in 20 years - wish we'd known that!). Any recommendations? I'm having trouble finding something that suits a modern-looking house and doesn't stand out too much. We're in Melbourne. Re: Security door on front of new house - how to choose? 4Sep 03, 2012 3:58 pm I recommend you have a look at the Stainless Steel mesh products available from people like Amplimesh (SupaScreen) and Crimsafe. Looks like heavy duty fly screen but very robust. Mesh is always black but frames can be in pretty much any colour you want. Screen hinged door for door and fixed panels for side lights. These are much less intrusive than the old grille type screen or the cast stuff and let in light air and views while maintaining security. Various arguments between competitors about whose system and which mesh is best but if they give a guarantee and meet all relevant Australian Standards it is worth getting them to quote. I can send you a pic of my front door - I have it powder coated in a dark purple to match our gutters etc. It has a nice pattern and doesn't stand out too much. You can choose different designs. Just be careful - the tougher you want it the more expensive it is. A lot of people don't expect that. Did you decide on a door? We just got quotes for all windows and sliding doors, but didn't think to get the front door included. I quite like the Heritage doors, but not sure how it would look on a new house. Especially if you like to sleep with a door/window open to allow air to flow. The extra piece of mind is having a dog of course !
