Browse Forums Safer Living 1 Jun 19, 2012 8:24 am We are in the process of getting smart wiring organised for our new build and were quoted about $350 per point to prewire CCTV system. My understanding is that it will be easier done while we are building then afterwards. Can we just buy an alarm system later on and plug it in prewired cabling? Does $350 per camera sounds ok and will it be any cheaper to do it afterwards. Also we are thinking about the same prewiring for intercom. Is it worth it or you are better off with some wireless intercom later down the track? The other question is do you really need intercom if you have CCTV camera and can see who is at the front of your house anyway? Do security sensors on the windows make any difference? I know that all doors have security sensors but windows are extra (at about $120 per window). Is it worth the cost and will they react if the window glass is broken? Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 2Jun 19, 2012 11:07 am AubinGroveFan The other question is do you really need intercom if you have CCTV camera and can see who is at the front of your house anyway? You can buy cameras that have in built microphones, and some do 2-way audio. But unless you know what the top of people's heads look like you may still want an intercom. $350 .. hmm.. what do you get for that? Do you know what cameras you want? Some cameras will be wierless, some will be wired, some need electricity and some are powerd over ethernet. For example, my OH has chosen Axis cameras for our home. In the most basic setup you need one ethernet cable (they are powered over ethernet), however, if we want to make use of the digital I/O (so the software records and sends alerts from triggers from door latches, movement sensors, etc) we need to allow for that, also there may be some audio cables for 2-way audio - some cameras have built in microphones. I hope this helps a little bit. P.S Another thing to consider is whether you want this to be part of a larger home automation system, because that may influence your choice of products. P.S Another thing to consider is whether you want this to be part of a larger home automation system $350 - only for the wiring, it doesn't include camera or any other equipment. Intercom prewire is the same price (no equipment is included). Larger home automation system is over $10,000 alone Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 4Jun 19, 2012 12:20 pm AubinGroveFan $350 - only for the wiring, it doesn't include camera or any other equipment. Larger home automation system is over $10,000 alone Ouch If $350 covers power and ethernet, I guess its not too bad and you should be fine for the majority of cameras unless you want to do 2-way audio (cameras generally wont have a speaker, so you may need to run wires from the camera to an external speaker). I assume video intercom would have similar requirements. I dont know much about alarm systems :/ Have you seen any systems that you like? Intercom prewire is the same price (no equipment is included). Larger home automation system is over $10,000 alone $350 is a bit steep just for running a couple of cables, but it would probably still be cheaper to do it at build time rather than afterwards. Also, think about what type of camera you want to use. IP (internet enabled) ones are better but slightly more expensive. You can set them up to view them on your iPad/phone/computer from anywhere in the world. The old style analog cameras are cheaper but less flexible. Depending on what type of camera you go for, make sure you get the right cabling done. Finally, if you decide to go for a wireless intercom, just remember, you still need to power it. Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 6Jun 20, 2012 11:50 pm Im doing all this stuff on my own. It's not too hard if you have the right tools and time. I'll probably be going the Foscam CCTV route as theyre rather inexpensive and quality is acceptable. I'll also be getting a simple Samsung video intercom from digitaldoorlocks.com.au http://www.digitaldoorlocks.com.au/products/video-intercom/samsung-video-intercom-shs2-3207/ These are $299 and will be in supply shortly. Hooking it up will be fairly straightforward.. the hard part is fixing the outdoor camera panel. Im installing a Samsung 6020 digital door lock soon. I should have it tommorow and will install it once i get a new front door in a couple of weeks or so. http://www.digitaldoorlocks.com.au/products/home-locks/shs6020-samsung-door-lock/ Building with Jandson Homes - Eclipse 18. http://adgnetworks.blogspot.com/ Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 7Jun 21, 2012 12:52 am trayracer $350 is a bit steep just for running a couple of cables, but it would probably still be cheaper to do it at build time rather than afterwards. It's saying, if you want to use an analog camera, it will use the same Cat 5 cable but you will need adapters at both ends. Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 9Jul 17, 2012 2:19 pm Finalising our smart wiring plan. We chose to prewire 3 CCTV cameras, however not sure if we'll need more cameras??? How hard is to wire CCTV cameras after the house been built? We'll probably go with wireless intercom as well instead of paying another $400 to prewire it (hope it's right decision)... Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 10Nov 08, 2012 9:38 pm Can anyone recommend me Home Monitoring and Larm Combo. Essentially I am looking for system with around 4 motion activated cameras, which is connected to DVR and also streams on the ineternet. The system has capability to send me an email when motion is detected so I can veiw the live streaming on any mobile device. Moreover the motion should also trigger alarm which can be disabled remotely. I would also like a GPRS/GSM backup for the system just in case the the culprit were to cut the wire, so that i could still veiw the primary camera via mobile device, by ringing the GPRS GSM number. ashrey|^| Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 11Dec 02, 2012 6:30 pm You're going to get sick of me posting this...but if your a little computer savvy you can do a full IP camera system no issue, I went through a few before settling on xprotect does the streaming to a phone thing, does the alerts thing (will SMS you an alert with attached screen shots etc...) It's too hard to say whether it will be cheaper doing it afterwards this can only be answered by looking at the property. There is no need to waste money running 4 core cable alongside CAT5/CAT6 purely for the provision of Analog Cameras via use of Balun, any proper smart wiring company who does CCTV pre-wiring will know this. Having intercom separate to the CCTV can be more convenient, if you dont intend to have live 24 hour display of your CCTV in a common room, having an intercom as-well as a better choice and will probably save more power.
