Front Door Handles - Pull or Lever?

I'm a little undecided about the type of door furniture i want on our front door.

I'm tossing up between the long pull handles with a simple escutcheon and roll bolt mortice style locks OR Gainsborough's contemporary Tri-Lock series???

Does anyone have any feed back on either of these styles/types of locks ( i've had the tri-lock before, it was okay but leaning towards the long door pull...not sure?). I also probably prefer the pull to be on both sides of the door instead of a pull on the outside and a standard handle on the inside.

Just for your information our door is the Corinthian Madison 920mm wide with clear glass as pictured here and with no sidelights. The door will be painted gloss, but we are looking to have it 2 pac painted soon after handover.

Our internal handles are the Gainsborough Elena.

What are your thoughts??? The other question is - Is one more secure than the other???

How could you even think of anything other than these??????

I think they look great. With a nice door, these handles only complement it!

I think they look great. With a nice door, these handles only complement it!

LOL, Ian likes the Tri-locks for security reasons.... but i like the streamlined "look" of the pulls... LOL....But i know it'll be ME that makes the final decision anyway... :wink:

We will be replacing our front door handle with the first pic you posted. This is what we both wanted in the beginning. I don't quite remember why we didn't do it while we were building.

Anyway, it's on our list of things to do.

However, my friend has a door handle similar to this and then they also have the deadlock either just above or just below (I can't remember) and one day she said to me, "I wish we just had a normal door handle!" LOL

I have noticed that some become a bit wobbly with use (but we're talking display homes whose doors are opened many, many times each day???

I'd probably prefer the lock underneath the pull.... so the pull becomes the feature, not the lock.

She said the problem is actually with their deadlock. Seems it's quite tight so they have to pull hard to open the door. But then again our deadlock is quite tight and fiddly, too. Damn deadlock! Heh

I agree that the pull handles look nice. May I ask what are the security concerns with them vs trilocks? Also is there a significant cost difference between them?

Those big parallel handles (not sure of the terminology with all this) certainly look very nice, but...

I'd be concerned that it'd be easy to use them to either lever one of the doors open from outside, or, by putting a bit of wood through the handles, prevent anyone inside from getting out.

Come to that, I don't know why front doors always open inwards. It'd be far, far superior from a security and strength point of view if they opened outwards. And it's not as if you'd clunk anyone this way - after all you always open the door for them.

How does the door remain closed?

Phoenix will you be using a door closer on them, or some sort of roller latch? It would be a pain having to lock the door every time to keep them closed.

Just out of curiosity….is the glass in all these new doors security glass?
Meaning…can they be broken easily, or are they a laminated glass? I get concerned about how close the glass sections are to the locks.

If anyone is like me….I leave my key in my deadlock (Inside) ….just for safely.
Mine…if I need to get out in a hurry, so for me that sort of door would be useless.

Hi Mish,

I believe that it is safety laminated glass only that is why we are putting an alarm system in and upping our insurance just in case.

Please consider where you are going to locate the door station Phoenix. For it to be effective it must show the people standing in front of the door. I opted for a separate camera over looking the front. No hiding. :lol:

dna, we haven't had one of the pull style handles before, only tri-locks so we want to make sure that the roller mortice locks are just as safe...(well as safe as a lock can be i suppose???)

Thanks kiwi056, we have already looked into that and we know where we "want" to put it. But it depends on the degree or angle of view i suppose on the camera concerned. If the degree/angle is not adequate then we will look into a little camera for the ceiling space.
I need to spend some time looking into those though, there is not many good ones around, IMO, we want one with a decent quality 7" colour screen that we can wall mount in the kitchen area too. Not one of the Aiphones either, can't be bothered picking up a handset. Too lazy!!! :wink:

So your hubby likes tri-locks for "security reasons" although he's doesn't know if tri-locks are more secure or not :lol:

Another thing I'd be concerned with would be the force required to open the door. If it's too hard for kids, I suspect they would forcefully open the door by charging into them and thus possibly causing damage to the wall as the door swings open :shock:

If those big parallel handles are also on the inside - and are robust and not just show ponies - you could work security like an old castle. A big, fat metal or wooden bar that slides across through the handles. Easy to do from the inside, but it'd take a little engineering thought of how to move it into place from the outside.
