Browse Forums Safer Living 1 Mar 17, 2011 12:15 pm So I've been getting some quotes for home security systems, and after compiling a table, I've got to make a decision. I do have two more quotes to come, but I expect it to be about the same. Our initial budget was $1000, but we can't seem to squeeze some keyfobs into that price unfortunately. We are willing to stretch it a bit though so no big problem there. Which of these systems are the best, and are the prices reasonable? Re: Which Home Alarm system? 2Mar 17, 2011 4:56 pm One of the things to remember in your comparison is the ongoing monitoring costs. These can vary considerably. We had a "free" system put in with higher monitoring cost for the first three years. After that I negotiated a lower rate so overall it has worked out the same as a higher cost unit with lower monitoring costs The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! I have lived in almost 8 houses which all had ness alarm systems. There are various models depending on the size of your home and requirements. I was looking for a remote for my existing Ness d16 which is quite easy to use and was recommended to check out ***weblink removed*** They sell a range of ness kits which are quite affordable. Have you considered buying online and then getting a security installer to install it? From experience and from what i've found doing most my research, the security installers all make their money on product mark ups. So if you can save on the product and then pay for the labour then im sure you'll get a good deal Re: Which Home Alarm system? 5Mar 27, 2011 10:22 am Buyer Beware!! There are pros and cons to any Alarm system. One thing I look for is an Australian company for local warranty and support. I came across a company that have been serving Australians for over 32 years RhinoCo (and no I am not employed by them) with a heap of security options, eg. Watchguard branded Home Alarms, Rhino Car Alarms, Watchguard and Securview CCTV Kits etc. They are based in Sydney and have "Resellers" Australia wide as well as some pretty good Resellers. Most of the Watchguard Alarm Systems (and CCTV DVR's) come with a 4 Year Replacement Warranty and they do both wired and wireless versions (Alarms that is) - monitored or self monitored. By the way, make sure whom ever you buy from actually has a ABN number. They may be registered in a particular state, but no ABN either means "A hobby Business (not worth dealing with - won't be around long), turn over less than $75k/year (not big enough to deal with - won't be around long) or they are not an Aussie business and are trying to bluff you with .com.au extensions on the web sites. Shop around and be careful. Deeps You might wish to get more quotes as you have not given the correct information to us all, if you are going to monitor the system with your mobile you will need a system that can handle it, that means a ness system, they are designed for monitoring with a mobile, if you want the hills system then you will require "operator software" (around $250), also the quote I gave you included an NX16 panel (you are not comparing horses with horses) Telecommunications systems, computer Networks and Security systems. Ness systems arent the only systems that you can monitor via a mobile, hills systems can be monitored via phone without spending any money on some so called operator software. Plug your phone line in, program it up to call a mobile it is pretty simple. The majority of alarm systems on the market can be programmed up to ring a mobile. We have installed hundreds of hills alarms to do this. Just curious for a house why would you quote to install a NX16? Isnt that a little overkill, I'm sure an 8 will do just fine. Re: Which Home Alarm system? 9Apr 13, 2011 3:37 pm Hi Lakgar, what area are you in? The reason I ask is if you go through a local security company that has been around for a few years you will find that there prices and customer service are alot better than one of the bigger companies like Signal Security. Another downfall with the bigger companies is they want you to sign a contract. Usually they sucker you in by giving you a free alarm system but signing you up on a monitoring contract where you have to stay with them for a minimum of 3 years whilst paying a higher rate than most monitoring centres charge. Which means you end up paying for the alarm system 3 times over. Re: Which Home Alarm system? 10Apr 13, 2011 3:46 pm TUBBYM Hi Lakgar, what area are you in? I was going with big company as I had read that small companies might close down without notice....so just to be on safe grounds. Do you know any security companies that service Williams Landing area? Thanks. Re: Which Home Alarm system? 11Apr 14, 2011 8:37 am lakgar TUBBYM Hi Lakgar, what area are you in? Thats fair enough, but there are alot of small companies which have been round for a number of years, its just a good way to save some money. Off the top of my head I dont know of many companies out there. The company I work for has been out that way a few times but it is pretty far to travel. Best bet is to do a google search, or yellow pages. I have decided on back to base monitoring with a company, Securetrac. They are giving 1st month free monitoring and then $33/month after that on a 2 year contract. Before finalising with them, just wanted to know are there any tricky bits about a security system installation that I should get clarified??? If you really have installed hundreds of hills systems then you would also know that the hills system cannot be "kissed off" with a smart phone, and if you have in fact sold systems to people and programmed them to shut down dialling after two attempts (the only way to stop them dialling due to smart phones not being able to kiss them off), your customers are probably all wondering why the "service light" will not go off. Hold down the * key for about 3 seconds once the tone breaks. I have never come across a smartphone that cant do it. I understand future expansion and all but a 16 is massive overkill, for a normal house a 8 for be fine if the house is larger then use a 12.
