Browse Forums Safer Living 1 Dec 30, 2010 11:52 am Hello Can anyone offer some price guides on the installation of an Electrical Safety switch. I have a 30yr old house, with 3 power circuits and 1 light circuit, no safety or circuit breakers are currently installed. What would a Safety switch alone cost? What would a board replacement + safety switch cost? I have 1 quote so far, $450 for the safety switch installed and $700 for a board replacement + switch. Lastly do all Electrician install the same product or is there a better brand than others, all I know of is Clipsal. I live in Melbourne Northern Suburbs. Cheers Stebe Re: Safety Switches RCD (Melb Northern Suburbs) 2Dec 31, 2010 11:35 pm Hi, That's a good price. I usually charge around a $1000 for a new switchboard with 2 rcds amd 5 circuit breakers. Current regulations state that houses should have at least 2 rcd. You can only legally run 3 circuits off 1 rcd. As for brands Clipsal or HPM are the best, NEVER BUY THAT CHEAP CRAP FROM BUNNINGS. Some do, some don't. Theres a vast array of various brands available-Merin Gerlin, Clipsal, HPM, amongst others. I'd go for Clipsal was most of the gear is off the shelf and known to work and fit. Problems creep in with some other RCDs with regards to feed connections, terminal offset and physical size if the installer tries to mix and match circuit breakers and enclosures. As for price, theres near on half a day (possibly more) in a job like this, this will include a bit of work prior to the new board being fitted as right active/neutral pair will have to be indentified to ensure there will be no false tripping. In the quote did it cover individual RCDs for each circuit or RCDs grouped to have two or three circuits protected by the one RCD? Re: Safety Switches RCD (Melb Northern Suburbs) 4Jan 04, 2011 2:26 pm Thanks for the replies and advice. The electrician gave me his personal opinion of "Better to replace the whole board and add in breakers along with the 2 safety switches" So I'm not sure if he is just trying to quote unnecessary work, or is his correct with his advice? So what is the best option, do the whole change over or just stick with the Safety Switches? My main concern is to minimise the risk of a home electrical accident.
