Browse Forums Safer Living 1 May 14, 2010 11:11 am I know what I want to achieve, and I've got a fair idea of what I need to achieve it, but I need some help and advice to fill in the blanks ! 1) I want to set up a CCTV system for home, comprising of up to 4 outside cameras. 2) I would like the option of adding up to 4 inside cameras at a later time, but not if this overcomplicates things or makes things too pricey. 3) My house is double-storey, so some cable runs may be between 30m and 50m and may need some "creative cabling" - ie. in conduit up the outside of walls to get into the roof space etc. Will have a Wireless LAN set up so this may be a better option? 4) I want to be able to record the output of all cameras back to a PVR or PC - preferably with the options of motion detection or continuous recording. 5) I want the PVR/PC to output in Composite (Yellow/Red/White) for live viewing (preferably split-screen) on a TV through an AV channel (I have a video distribution system that accepts composite inputs for distribution throughout the house). Are those $1000-$2000 Swann systems from D ick Smiths any good, and are they the market I should be looking at, or am I better off trying to source the components myself and slap together a "homebrand" system ? Re: Recommend a CCTV System to me - 4 Cameras ? 6Aug 16, 2010 9:31 am Hi Guys, I may be of some assistance here. Firstly, the wireless Swann camera setup is absolutely CRAP! I have purchased one of these myself during my build and you still need to plug the camera into a power outlet, which defeats the purpose of ‘wireless’ if you ask me! And let’s not forget about the interference and range of these crappy units. Put the receiver 5m away in another room and reception quality drops dramatically. A wired system would beat a wireless system hands down any day of the week. I have taken a look at many DVR & CCTV systems from ‘specialist’ companies costing over $5k setups to cheapies from the likes of Middys. In the end, I went with this one: http://www.protechsecurity.com.au/produ ... duct_id=50 Basically a Linux based PC box DVR with enough ports and functions to offer flexibility to keep anyone happy, including streaming over the Internet. As an additional benefit, because it uses PC components, it is quite easy and cheap to upgrade components, eg. HDD and also has USB ports for external HDDs You’ll find that HDDs, being mechanical components, are often the first things to die. Oh, and the standard cameras that come with this system are absolutely crap, so I recommend you get better quality ones like this: http://www.protechsecurity.com.au/produ ... duct_id=47 You probably can use the supplied cameras internally, but I wouldn’t bother with it for an external setup. So if you want 4 channels outside and 4 channels inside, simply get 2 units. NB: Please note that I have no affiliation with Pro Tech Security and there are many other similar products on the market, so I am not endorsing one product over another. Swann is definitely one to pass by, It depends realy what you want to do with the images you will recieve, if it is for detection and ID of a perp then I suggest a high resolution camera, if you are serious there are megapixel ip camera's available for a cost, these have built in compression (mpeg4) and also a built in web site you can access remotely, you can put SD cards in some. on the other hand the Bosch camera's are quite good, Ness also there are quite a few good camera's out there, my sugestion would be to stay away from the retail outlets and speak with a licensed security person. Re: Recommend a CCTV System to me - 4 Cameras ? 8Jan 09, 2011 3:21 pm Hi everyone, Came across this company when doing an Internet search. Has anyone used this company's products. http://www.alltaylored.com.au/security_ ... ducts.html Cheers, J & C Re: Recommend a CCTV System to me - 4 Cameras ? 9Dec 02, 2012 6:24 pm a few basics... you need to start with the infrastructure, all Security systems are now IP based (no more coax) so you'll essentially be running cat 5 to each camera, I generally run two cat 5's to each location, if it's a corner, 3 (you can get POE powered IR leds which is how you illuminate at night without irritating your neighbors & how you avoid massive power bills) I've used xprotect and it's great highly recommended, just buy yourself a POE switch and it'll power the camera's and illuminators Slooowwwwly getting a Manhatten 35 in Middleton Grange It's all about wireless, self install now. The cost/benefit of wired setups for the house are no longer what they used to be. Lots of wireless options.
