Browse Forums Safer Living 1 Sep 21, 2007 7:14 pm Hi,
We're thinking of installing a security system and would like to seek your opinion on whether to do it while building or after hand over. Builder is charging $1400+ for 8 zones and $1600+ for 12 zones. Brand is the Networx NX-series by the Hills Electronic Security. We know that it would be cheaper to do it after handover, but worried that it might be a hassle (or would end up costing more) as we are building a double-storey (does it matter?). Would greatly appreciate your opinion on this. Thanks! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Those prices are OK! You might save $100 by doing it yourself later but there is less hassle this way IMO. I believe the pricing you have been given is very good and agree you wont save much doing it yourself later. Did you get 2 fob buttons/remotes in that package, so much easier to turn on and off alarm as generally most people leave in their car or with your keys and I think you'll use your alarm everytime you go out that way. Re: Install security system by builder or after handover? 4Sep 25, 2007 11:54 pm Thanks for the advice, we've asked the builder to add it in!
Law18, yes we have the 2 fob buttons/remotes in the package. Just wondering which one to choose - the 8 or 12 zones (we're building double-storey). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Install security system by builder or after handover? 5Sep 26, 2007 12:14 am 4 sensors for downstairs and a reed switch for each door...
Provided you have less than 3 doors an 8 point system would be fine. Should we include the front and back garage (back is a roller door)? Also, we have a french door in the balcony (front of house). is it worth it to zone it? can thieves enter a balcony ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Install security system by builder or after handover? 7Sep 26, 2007 9:38 pm VJ We have four doors downstairs - front, family bifolds, dining sliding and laundry. Make sure you have a reed switch on all of these and a delay setting on the ones you will come in and out of and instant on the ones you won't. VJ Should we include the front and back garage (back is a roller door)? This is a difficult one as you would need to disarm it before you entered if and if you forgot the neighbourhood might not like you very much. Personall the rear roller door is a yes the front maybe but on a serious time delay (3 minutes) and a piezo buzzer to remind you as soon as you open the door to shut off the alarm in case you forget. VJ Also, we have a french door in the balcony (front of house). is it worth it to zone it? can thieves enter a balcony Personally if someone wants to get into my house that bad that they will climb to second storey... good luck to them. Something you may want to consider is different ways of arming the system. ie at night my system can be armed for just the perimetre windows and doors so that if i go out the wife and kids are safe... I think they call this zoned arming. Thanks for the quick reply.. and sorry for my late reply. Been busy recently for the colour selection. Since the electrical plans were already submitted by the electrical consultant company to our developer, we couldn't add it thru them, need to ask builder to add the security system in the contract. During colour selection, there was a higher range for the 8 zones, where you would receive a text message once the alarm goes off. It's $1650, as opposed to $1400+ (without the text message). If we could still add the security system, we might go for this one. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Install security system by builder or after handover? 9Sep 28, 2007 10:54 pm you want an SMS??
no thanks As long as it has a dialer (and most do) just have it ring your phone. This should still be the original $1400... The $1400+ doesn't have it. Does it mean that the 8-zone with phone for $1650 is expensive? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! No its still OK but if it was $1400 it was $250 cheaper!! lol Are you sure the $1400 does not have a dialer built in? What model is it?? Matt I have reverted to username - mattwalker Carlisle Homes - Grande 43 My building experience is here: http://www.ourgrandeplan.blogspot.com Re: Install security system by builder or after handover? 12Sep 29, 2007 9:52 pm During our electrical appointment, the consultant just gave us the price for the 8-zone and 12-zone NetworkX (NX-Series) security systems.
She didn't elaborate on the features, just gave us the brochure to read at home, since were weren't decided yet at that time. When we had our colour selection recently, I asked about the 8-zone security systems. We were told that there were 2 types, one with the dialer ($1650), the other without ($1400+). So we realised that the one originally quoted to us was the lower-end model. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Install security system by builder or after handover? 13Sep 30, 2007 12:05 am Very much likely that it is the same system - the extra $250 is probably the charge for additional programming or the addition of a Mode-3 telephone point.
Either way you want to be notified when your alarm goes off (or have a security company notified - personal preference). Cheers P1T --- HTTP://THECAMBRIDGE.BLOGSPOT.COM Re: Install security system by builder or after handover? 14Oct 02, 2007 10:07 pm Yes, that was (notification) the only difference, according to them.
We went for that model and so extra $1650 in the contract . ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping!
