Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with installing a digital door lock? I'm always attracted to technology and I'm looking at installing one with a digital touch numberpad and/or biometric fingerprint scanner. If someones got experiences, good and bad I'd like to hear it. Thanks! Cheers, Gavin
Re: Digital Door Locks 2Aug 31, 2009 5:05 pm Also... if I can butt in on the original question... has anyone ever seen a keyless/biometric lock that doesn't look like either a mobile phone stuck onto the door or a horrible piece of industrial non-design? Something suitable for a rustic cottage styled house. Re: Digital Door Locks 4Sep 08, 2009 9:14 pm Thudd Something suitable for a rustic cottage styled house. I think the same site got the GMF10 and GMF100 they could fit into your cottage styled house... Re: Digital Door Locks 5Nov 22, 2009 4:10 pm Just bumping this in hope for some more fresh opinions on these particular door locks! Anyone got some fresh idea's/opinions on these things as we are looking at installing a couple and just not sure what would be better. We have found battery operated, lever handle, deadbolt etc etc THOUGHTS PLEASE??? Re: Digital Door Locks 6Nov 23, 2009 8:07 am I had a Bio-Lock with swipe card reader installed, and I can quite conclusively say that they are absolute rubbish. I had problems with the installation of my one and trying to get spare parts for the lock was non-existent. Stick with the tried and tested mechanical locks, much cheaper and no hassles. I've learnt my lesson and never again. Re: Digital Door Locks 7Nov 23, 2009 1:11 pm Hi rlay1, Yes I do believe the swipe card locks are rubbish, this is why we are looking at the others! Hopefully someone can let me know what they are like??? ANYONE??? Re: Digital Door Locks 8Nov 24, 2009 10:01 am My one was a combination swipe card (proximity card) and finger print reader. Take my advice and avoid them like the plague. They are really not worth the hassle. Let me provide you with a run down of all the issues that I had with my one: 1. The reader on the outside of the door is connected to the main board on the other side of the door by a few flimsy wires which can be easily severed. This is exactly what happened to my one during installation. 2. Flipping the door handle around from left to right should have been an easy task… it wasn’t… the spring tension for the handle actually broke! 3. Fair enough it was butchered by my tradies trying to install it, just goes to show it isn’t as straight forward to install as they claim 4. I sent it back to the Australian distributors for repairs / spare parts. They inspected it and told me that they don’t normally keep spare parts, had to send it back to the manufacturer in China, etc, etc. I didn’t bother repairing it and got them to send it back. 5. The unit takes 4 AA batteries, which last approx 6 months, depending on use. When changing batteries, you have x number of minute to change it over before the entire memory gets wiped out. 6. They are a pain in the a$$ to program… e.g. first set up a master account by pushing a number of button combinations, the unit will beep x number of times and flash a certain colour, then press this button to store the first fingerprint, the unit will beep and flash another colour, then confirm the same fingerprint again and will beep-beep again and change to green if successful, if you get a long beeeppp and it turns red, it was not successful… and try again, repeat for remaining 98 fingerprints… 7. Doesn’t always read your fingerprint successfully the first time. They also recommend you store a number of your fingers in the reader just in case it doesn’t read your fingerprint properly. 8. You need to always ensure that the reader is clean. And to me it looks quite fragile; it is only a little square piece of glass. Probably wont read at all if got scratched. 9. I recall an episode of Mythbusters where they tried to defeat the fingerprint readers and all methods they tried were successful! So it defeats the entire purpose of providing good, or any, security at all. All in all, 500 bucks down the drain. If that is not a good enough reason to persuade you away from bio door locks, nothing will! In fact I am so sure of it’s crapness that I am willing to give you my (broken) one to see what a piece of $#@! it is for yourself Re: Digital Door Locks 9Nov 24, 2009 10:40 am We have a digital one at present and love it. It allowed us to get away from installing a normal keyed lock on our double doors with gorgy stainless steel handles. Ours is digital as well as having little swipe cards that are on our key rings. We liked it because we could give a generic code to the tradies who were coming and going. Then when everyone was finished we changed it to a code that we only knew - as well as giving it to certain family members should an emergency ever arise. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Digital Door Locks 10Nov 24, 2009 1:51 pm Hi Rlay thanks very much for all the info, do you think it could have been the brand? Or just these type of locks in general??? Could you please provide me with the details of this particular lock so I do avoid it! Brand, model etc etc, Cheers. Kyton, can you tell me the brand, model etc etc of yours so I can look into these ones, knowing you have had no trouble thus far! Thank you!
