Browse Forums Safer Living 1 Aug 24, 2009 11:53 pm We live in a unit in a block which has huge mains-connected smoke detectors EVERYWHERE (see pics) - probably over 20 years old and linked back to the central fire panel. We're going to repair/replace the ceilings and we want to replace the detectors with something smaller and less obtrusive that conform to the regs and can be wired into the existing system. Can anyone recommend a replacement which fulfills the above criteria. If you disconnect a smoke detector for example whilst working on the ceiling, a fault will show on the panel which will result in a technician or the fire brigade responding, costs may be incurred. I suggest that you talk to the body corporate and find out the way ahead with your planned works. The type of smoke detector has to match the existing system and may have to be installed by the fire services company that has the contract to maintain the system. good luck Billy Re: Smoke Detector Replacement 3Dec 14, 2009 11:44 am Billy_4T The type of smoke detector has to match the existing system and may have to be installed by the fire services company that has the contract to maintain the system. This is going to be the main issue. I had a conversation in passing with our sparky last week as he was adding a new smoke detector in. He said that the systems have changed so often recently that even our 10 year old original detector is no longer manufactured - so he had to change the old detector to ensure that it triggered together correctly with the new one. That's pure anecdotal evidence - someone else on here might know more about the topic. Just be careful with building stability during construction, that is when the structure may be weakened, refer to your engineering drawings for stability methodology. 1 7226 Can anyone recommend a good/affordable retaining wall and fence builder that I can get a quote from located in Sydney? 8 45817 Last year I had a gas leak at my house. 3 days later, I have about 1 sqm of my exposed aggregate paving broken up. I am not sure how to go about getting it repaired… 0 10411 |
