Browse Forums Safer Living 1 May 07, 2009 10:19 pm Hi there. I am in a bit of a quandry. We are building a two-story home and have incorporated a laundry chute. Was wondering what the best way was to cover the opening hole at the top level? Was thinking a door similar to a refuse chute/or charity bin handle - but have no idea where to purchase one from. Does anyone know of where? Or any other ideas? Re: Laundry chute - handle??? 2May 08, 2009 9:09 am Hi runningbear, I would think of asking a company that sells doors or timber? Maybe even a cabinet making company? If they don't sell them they will probably be able to direct you to someone who does. I would even give a Big Hardware chain a call, if you have a Bunnings they may have one? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Laundry chute - handle??? 3May 09, 2009 9:33 pm Could you get a door that's sort of like a large cat-flap (hinged at the top) - that way you can push it open and drop clothes in as opposed to having to pull it open with one hand to put clothes in with the other. Re: Laundry chute - handle??? 4May 24, 2009 1:20 pm Where is your chute opening on the top floor? Is it directly above the laundry? I am also thinking of incorporating this into our new two storey house but no idea where to put it and how much room it actually takes up :S Re: Laundry chute - handle??? 5May 24, 2009 2:22 pm We've got one also. My builder is going to make a door & from our discussions, I envisage it will have piano hinge across the bottom and pull out from the top with a clip, like a sideway linen cupboard - basically just a hole in the wall. Ours drops straight down into a laundry cupboard. Builder says it will need slippery walls (thinking of metal sheeting or melamine) so clothes don't get caught up. Size wise ours is about 400 X 500mm I think. Re: Laundry chute - handle??? 6May 24, 2009 2:59 pm Thanks for the responses. They have been really helpful. My main concern is safety as I have a 1 and 3 yr old (and a little dog - I can just see him taking some trips down the laundry chute). Have spoken to our builder and cabinet maker and he is going to get something made up on the lines of refuse lid/with the safety flap underneath. The chute drops down from the linen cupboard upstairs to the ground level laundry cuboard. So it is a fair drop. Re: Laundry chute - handle??? 9May 24, 2009 8:46 pm It is a straight vertical drop. In the cupboard on the top level they have built it up 1.2m. So thinking of putting the handle on top of that. A child-lock might be an option that just takes away the convenience of a laundry chute. But have to think of safety first. A child-lock would take away some of the convenience of the laundry chute, but the majority of the convenience (i.e. not having to take piles of laundry down the stairs) would still be there. Like you said, safety first Black on light wood does look good. Not sure if it will be as long lasting as a steel finish? 6 6347 Get some long brass machine screws and bolt right through the gate and put brass acorn nuts and washers on the other side. It will never come off 1 9070 Agreed. I just found out today the certifier has not given the final sign off. 2 4072 |
