Browse Forums Safer Living Re: Deadlocks scare me, are there any alternatives? 22Feb 05, 2009 8:24 pm kyton We have those tri-locks in this rental (6mth old Masterton home) - I hate them. Unless there is a trick I don't know about anyone from the inside is able to turn the handle and open the door. Now that is all fine and good when you are older but when you are 20mths or 3.5yrs then it is not a good thing. So these TriLocks come in a few different configs - it seems you have the single barrel version. The doublebarrel seems to suit your needs... but deadlocking the door (IMHO and many others) when you are home is a no-no (the original post has links explaining why). I would suggest a small latch located near the top of the door to prevent the kids opening the door, but not preventing your escape in the event of an emergency... Re: Deadlocks scare me, are there any alternatives? 23Feb 06, 2009 8:07 am Tribasus - no way in hell would we ever install something on this home. If you knew how much the bond was you would understand.
And sorry but when you have two children who are so excited to see Daddy pull up that they open the door and rush out - I would so deadlock the door in a heartbeat every afternoon. There is a screen sliding door only 3mt away from the main door so I would have no concerns about getting out of the home in a hurry. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Deadlocks scare me, are there any alternatives? 24Feb 12, 2009 9:49 pm we had a locksmith come and install our deadbolt things today. DH organised the locksmith and I didn't get time to look at the trilocks in person so I just said yeah ok go ahead with the ones we were going to go with.
Well I come home from getting my hair done, to find that he hadn't replaced the old lock with the new one, as I had assumed he would know to do!! The old one is still there; now we have the new one sitting ABOVE the old one. So we have 3 locks on our front door - the knob/handle, the builders deadlock thing and then our new one! And they aren't even spaced properly! And the new one isn't a shiny chrome, it's a brushed aluminium one and it all looks SO UGLY.!!!! One thing's for sure though, no robber's getting in our front door. Re: Deadlocks scare me, are there any alternatives? 25Feb 12, 2009 10:04 pm donuts .... So we have 3 locks on our front door ..... Bummer.... your going to have to put your coffee down On the plus side you can do the maxwell smart thing and lock every second lock for security Building Upside down house in Wantirna VIC Current Stage: Procrastination... it's just all too hard.... I am hoping the security door frame will at least hide some of the ugliness when it arrives in a couple of weeks. Which trilocks did you get? Single or double barrel? And how are they, apart from the ugliness? Still could be worse, no? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Wishful Builders... Re: Deadlocks scare me, are there any alternatives? 29Feb 13, 2009 10:01 pm Seriously how do you open that ?. Surely you have to turn the handle of the top and bottom one whilst turning the key on the middle one ?. Or can the middle one be locked and unlocked so you only have to work the other two ?. I am thinking though, that you'd unlock the handle first, then the middle one, leave it unlocked, then turn the key in the top one while turning the knob in the other hand. Or yes, you could leave the middle one unlocked. Or, sometimes I've found in other houses you can unlock one and sort of push it a bit in the frame so the bolt stays out of the lock (probably not good for it), then unlock the other one and push open.. have been able to do that one handed at times. Luckily I'll be getting in and out of the house mostly through the garage! Love it! Can just picture people locking the unlocked lock to get out (because it was the one that was 'supposed' to be locked) and then unlocking the other locks and then getting confused.... and so on.... Re: Deadlocks scare me, are there any alternatives? 32Feb 14, 2009 11:36 am Oh dear, I have just read this thread and realised I havent discussed with my builder what lock I want. Mr B just told me a lock is already on the door must go now to see what I have , will take pics Still very confused about the whole thing.
Mrs B Re: Deadlocks scare me, are there any alternatives? 33May 19, 2009 3:35 pm LOL - that was all a very good read. Sorry though that it turned out to be such hassle for you with a very odd solution.
With deadlocks we have to problems. Even though there are porhibited in many European countries it seems that the Australian insurance companies are still keen. On the other hand we have the fire brigades that recommend not to deadlock yourself in your home. For us it's all about keeping unwanted intruders outside. Meaning the door has to be locked from the outside. From the inside it should be still easy to get out. A turn knob or snip instead of a key is one option. Even better is an egress function on the door. That way you can lock the door with the turn snip which makes it impossible to get in. Form the inside you just push the handle down and you are out - Safety and security in one solution. Having all these things factory fitted makes your life much easier and avoids that clueless people come up with a tri-lock-security-system like the once on the photos - Best regards Kris
