Re: Wood floors for the bedrooms 5Aug 25, 2010 9:18 am I'm wanting to get rid of the carpet in our bedrooms and replace with wood flooring. The rest of our house is tiled. I don't want to do it to increase value though. I just hate carpet! Haven't decided what type of wood flooring though... Ash (username royalblue) is a popular contributor on this forum and he cleans carpets for a living. He's quiet a fanatic for carpets. Check out some of his carpet related posts to see what I mean. If you have timber floors- wouldn't you be getting a rug anyhow? or just plain timber. or perhaps you're in a warmer climate. Re: Wood floors for the bedrooms 10Aug 25, 2010 8:50 pm I don't know that I would do it. I actually prefer carpet to wood in bedrooms, it's more comfortable and a lot warmer underfoot. We have beautiful original boards that would be a shame to cover, but I would really like to carpet. I think I agree with Casa2, I'd spend the money elsewhere. If you wanted (under) floor insulation, it's available cheaply. If you wanted (under) floor insulation, it's available cheaply. I disgree. Underlay plus wool carpet is a great insulator. We got rid of carpets & polished the floors in Melbourne & regretted it. It seemed cold & unfinished and carpet is more luxurious underfoot. That said, whether it adds value depends on your local market. i'd look around at what's selling & maybe ask the REAs. Nice wood floors will always be better than ** worn carpet so there may be many things at play. Re: Wood floors for the bedrooms 15Aug 29, 2010 9:25 pm About 6 months ago I pulled up the old carpet in the bedroom and played with the idea of having the jarrah floor underneath sanded. In the end I had it recarpeted and don't regret it one bit. I think wood floors are great and very practical in living areas but in bedrooms carpet is warm and cosy, and lovely and soft underfoot. The wood floors were just lacking warmth (mentally and physically) in the bedrooms. IMO carpet in bedrooms is always a plus, I love wood floors but they just don't give the same sense of comfort that many people would want in the bedrooms. Sorry Casa, missed this. She felt it made the bedrooms feel too cold and would rather carpet next time for a cozy feel. Re: Wood floors for the bedrooms 18Aug 30, 2010 9:32 am When we first did our house the floorcoverings were based on cost. I got given some basically brand new, commercial quality carpet which was enough to do 2 of the bedrooms. The third i just polished the boards at the same time as polishing the rest of the house, as it was the cheapest option. I always thought would carpet it later. However, 14 years on I have not, and doubt I will. I like the timber floor. I dont find it colder than the other rooms, but I hate a warm bedroom anyway.(We sleep with the window open right through winter and we're in Melbourne ![]() It is easy to clean and I love the look. We also have animals in the house, so no fleas can live on timber flooring, easy to pick up hairs etc. We are doing another bedroom now and will probably put a timber floor ![]() Re: Wood floors for the bedrooms 20Sep 02, 2010 3:43 pm We are renovating our house and I'm making sure there is not an attached piece of carpet in sight! We do however live on the north coast of NSW so our winters are at the coldest about 15 degree during the day and very short timeframe. I dont like tiles (harsh under foot), although I am heavy footed!, cold and unforgiving. We used to live in the snowy mountains so I had carpet in bedrooms, family (mistake) and lounge, rest was floorboards. Everyone commented on how lovely they were (even when it was 1 degree outside! As for the carpet, I went the most expensive carpet I could find due to wearability and keeping that lovely "new" look. After 4 years though, I think it didnt look much better than cheap carpet in the traffic areas. I must say I am a fixed carpet disliker. I also have a husband and daughter who have asthma and its recommended that they dont have carpet. I find carpet is dirty, and smelly (especially with small kids) and unless your prepared to have professionally cleaned every 2 months and vac every day - its a no brainer for me - give me floorboards. Note I did say "fixed carpet". I love rugs and will be having a rug in each bedroom for the kids to sit on and play. I'd be very wary of such a product.
