Re: Time wasting trades 14Apr 25, 2018 11:27 pm simply10 Hi there. I am new here. Over the years I have employed various trades to do various tasks, and have had varied experiences. I would like to ask about time wasting when being paid an hourly rate. I am currently in the middle of what I consider a straight forward and simple project, and have wasted a significant amount of money over many things. I am not looking to be judged about project management as I passed the point of caring weeks ago, and am looking forward to this project being finished this week, and a significant lesson learnt. I would like to ask has anyone else experienced times when trades seem to be just milking you for every cent they can if paid on an hourly rate? I can provide many examples, however the best one is 52 screws holding a 7m long piece of Fascia on. (in total there was 24 lineal meters of Fascia (200 x 30) and 242 screws held that it in place). This is no joke, and a guy that has been a carpenter for 30 odd years. Each hole was predrilled, Fascia positioned, screwed in place, then a bog with hardner used to fill each of those holes, then sanded (hardest bog to sand). Am I having the p### taken here? Or are there really chippies out there that think this is how a job is done. Not looking to offend anyone. I have a fair amount of reno experience, but this seems odd to me. Cheers!! at 600mm centred rafters over that distance i would expect around 140 odd screws 240 seems excessive , as for sanding and bogging well thats a job well done Re: Time wasting trades 15Apr 25, 2018 11:30 pm building-expert It looks a bit over the top, why wasn't fascia simply nailed on with a hand gun? It has a lot to do with a set of instructions you give, credibility in giving it and supervising and correcting. If you don't tell them how it is done they will take a long way around. In this type of scenario, I would have pulled him up and said forget the screws and use your nailing gun and got a painter to do the filling nails in end grain make a horrible fix , also you would need to use galvanised nails on losp fascia which cost a fortune so probably just as economic to use screws. Re: Time wasting trades 16Apr 25, 2018 11:33 pm simply10 I totally agree with what you have said, and in my initial message said I am not after commentary about project management. This is one guy building one structure. If I had to supervise it, I might as well just do it myself. Would you or anyone else consider it "normal" to put 52 screws in a 7m length of Fascia? Thats more what I am asking no that is not normal Always get multiple quotes, no matter how reasonable/cheap you think it is.
