Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Oct 06, 2016 2:18 pm Good afternoon, My partner and I are in the process of designing our owner build home, and have come to the point of picking the facade. We are building a double story home and are leaning to a full brick home with little to no render. We have spoken to many people with differing opinions about cost and durability. The main question for us is, What is the price difference between a rendered home and a full brick home? Your help is much appreciated Re: Render V Brick Facade 2Oct 06, 2016 3:08 pm When you say 'rendered home' as opposed to brick, are you talking about a home that is built with bricks and then rendered, or built with an alternative material (like Hebel) and then rendered? I know that some houses are 'built' with something other than brick and then rendered, particularly upstairs, is this what you are talking about? Our house was fully built with brick and then the two pillars at the front were to be rendered. They are actually being tiled, our choice, but regardless the pillars were still built with brick to start with, and then would have been rendered over. I meant using an alternative material such as Hebel and then it being rendered. We are being told that going with Hebel and then rendering is cheaper, is that true? Re: Render V Brick Facade 4Oct 06, 2016 3:22 pm Probably - I don't actually know though. But an average single storey house needs around 10,000 bricks and then laying them is a big job. Hebel would be a lot quicker to install, so even if the product isn't cheaper, the labour to install it would be (I would think). Personally I prefer brick, as I think that over time (a long period) it is less maintenance. Some renders tend to get stain marks, etc, which look a bit ugly once they are set in. Each to their own though. My blog: tashandpaul.wordpress.com Re: Render V Brick Facade 5Oct 06, 2016 3:36 pm That is our preference as well, and even then, if you change your mind you can always render over the brick. May i ask how much it cost for you to complete your house in brick? be it single or double story., Thank you for your help Re: Render V Brick Facade 6Oct 06, 2016 3:39 pm To be honest I don't know, the builder has an allowance for the bricks in their quote. We paid more (upgrade cost) to be able to get a particular brick but that's all I know.
