Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Sep 07, 2016 3:50 pm Hi there.
I am starting to plan my first house build, and was hoping that the community could offer some insight into what timber to use for the sub-floor material. My house plan is for a 12m x 6m rectangular house of stud wall construction, trusses in a gabled roof, and sheet tin on top - so not a seriously heavy house. This will be a weekender on a bush block. I've done some research on stress loads, and wanted to confirm if 140 x 45 H3 treated pine outdoor MGP 10 timber (from Bunnings) is an appropriate timber to use for a sub-frame. Yellow tongue would then go on top of that for the floor of the building. My current layout has 4 bearers running the full length (2 x 6m lengths), with 6m joists sitting on top and nailed into the bearers. I was thinking that this would be a relatively quick way of building the joists/bearers as well. Bearers are 1940mm apart and joists are at 450mm centres. I am planning that the house is on piers, but I was aiming to open another topic on what materials to use for the piers later on after some more research. The house is made of structural 90 x 45 MGP 10 pine timber stud framework, with glass fibre insulation and plasterboard. Roof will have trusses made of same timber, and a sheet tin roof. Re: Bearer & Joist Timber Selection 2Sep 09, 2016 11:16 am Hi Scotty Nice 3D Model and just the way engineers like viewing it ,LOL, from beneath but unfortunately it's missing some critical design information, like we also need to see whats above. ie walls, loads, etc, HTH BTW what 3D BIM software did you use & is it browser viewable & usable?, some of my 3D BIM Details & Data are below Just a thought you might want to start with the deck model, design, quants, materials, details, etc Cheers Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Bearer & Joist Timber Selection 3Sep 09, 2016 8:03 pm Thank you for the reply. The program I use is "Sketchup", it's a free CAD drawing program that Google used to own - nothing compared to the software you seem to be using that's for sure! I'd be interested in your opinion of using joist hangers too for a house like the one I'm planning, if you wouldn't mind sharing. Thanks again. Re: Bearer & Joist Timber Selection 4Sep 11, 2016 12:14 pm I am familiar with sketchup and others..But before you jump in and Model everything here are a few points to consider 1.Modelling software can't do approximations..so the software makes it's an exact process 2 In reality approximations save me and my clients time and money and are used in verifying simulations & Proofs 3.therefore when considering Engineering & Construction options there may be many alternate solutions..engineers pick the best optimised solution based on data and information provided by clients 4.So modelling connections, joist hangers & nails can be time consuming and not warranted at sketch stage... BTW..no different to modelling Door handles & paint colour lol...I tell owners go to BUNNINGS for assistance, CMYK to this engineer stands for Colour (Pot) MY Kitchen In a Nut shell.. think of the modelling process in terms of what broad data/information is needed at what stage. In the initial stage You will need to start with the site..what is you wind loading Cat. as you may need to up grade all your connections, also, soil Condition, site report and Bushfire Attack Level (BAL)rating ,etc, etc Photos also help Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Seconded; we just used these last weekend to build a small deck. They worked perfectly as we have bluestone in the area where we wanted to build so digging down was not… 8 7702 Hi Mrboh Just wondering if you have any BAL or flame zone issues on your block, as getting compliance with BAL requirements whilst doing bearers and joists is tough. Not… 1 6758 Assuming you've modelled the TB8, TB10, TB12, TB2 & J1 joists/LVLs there, it appears as per drawing to me. There maybe should be an additional J1 between TB10 and T12 if… 3 27642 |
