Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum Re: Load bearing beams 3Jul 26, 2016 7:34 pm A timber beam like you have mentioned isn't outlined in AS1684, it would depend on a few factors i.e roof covering, room sizes etc If a timber strutting beam could connect to a beam as you describe the issue would be how to successfully tie those two together to avoid sagging/splitting or pulling apart. These days it's usual for pfc/ub steel to be put in the roof with tabs/cleats to connect and support the purlins/struts, joists and beams etc as you describe. Re: Load bearing beams 4Jul 26, 2016 7:56 pm xazx Is it possible to support a strutting beam off of a counter beam, or do strutting beam strictly need to be supported over walls? Thanks You can support a strut over a steel or timber beam or 3D truss though you will need to consider horizontal/axial loads, torsion, deflection in all axis's and stiffening/bracing for anything other than vertical/plumb strutting..a rough sketch of what you are trying to achieve would help?
