Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Aug 05, 2015 4:44 pm Hi all, we have just bought a 780m2 block of sloping land in Mitcham Melbourne. Our next step is to contract a good Building Designer to design our home. We are in fairly bushy surrounds so we are looking for a house that blends in with the surrounds but still has a modern edge - "Contemporary Australian" is the name of the style apparently. (think timber, stone, glass) We want something that stands out as fairly different - but not to crazy different! Just not the typical double storey house with portico and 28dgs roof. So far we have got quotes from 2 Building Designers and they have come back in the low to mid $20,000s for Architecture and full 3d drawings - no structural engineering. The prices have given us a bit of a heart attack...! Can anyone recommend a good Building Designer who doesn't cost the earth but has fantastic designs in the "Contemporary Australian" style we are looking for? Thanks in advance! Re: Reccommend good Draftsman/Architect Melbourne Eastern Su 2Aug 13, 2015 8:36 am Congrats on the purchase. Mitcham is a beautiful suburb. We have also just purchased land out East, bit under 1/3 acre slightly sloping block in Croydon Nth also in a fairly bushy environment. Our design brief sounds simlar in that we are after a modern Australian design that fits with its environment. We're looking around at different local Draftsman options at the moment. We have had a fee proposal from a local company Lateral Building Design in Heathmont. http://www.lateralbuildingdesign.com.au/ They have provided us costings in around 10k for working drawings including energy assessment, engineering, soil reports etc. They are not architects but come highly recommended as very good draftsman. We have a fair idea on the layout and look we are after and really just require the Draftsman to 'formalise' our design on paper thus eliminating the need for an Architect. Best of luck with the process it sure is an exciting time! Re: Reccommend good Draftsman/Architect Melbourne Eastern Su 3Oct 26, 2015 11:19 am I'm going to build in Croydon North as well and my block is on steep slope bushy setting. I would suggest before getting too acquainted with floor plans, it's better to work out budget and probably a good idea to fork out a bit of money to get a soil test and contour survey done. This will give you some idea of how much you will need for site work for different types of building styles/methods. I'm about to start the design again as I find the one I have now just need to spend too much on site work. Re: Reccommend good Draftsman/Architect Melbourne Eastern Su 4Nov 20, 2015 12:25 pm Highly recommend Graeme Bicknell and associates. They designed our last place. They were recommended to me by a builder we had hunted down after seeing his previous work. Your build is relatively simple, I believe your job can be easily done by a good building designer, you really do not need to pay for the architect. Remember, architect's… 3 10985 I've just had a look at the website. The company are just building broker's.
