Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Apr 27, 2015 8:33 pm I'm sure there is 1000's of topics already on OB how difficult is it will I save money. I work I the commercial building industry as a labourer but have no experience building I work a 56 hours a week with only Sunday's off. I guess what I'm asking is am I kidding myself to do an OB on a 30sq townhouse on 450sq block with 10mt fall back to front 3 level basement garage Re: Guide me in the right direction 2Apr 27, 2015 8:41 pm Given the hours you work its going to make things difficult. It sounds like you dont have a job that allows you to do research etc on the job. You also want a flexible job, that would allow u too take leave on short notice. Only having Sundays off is going to make things difficult. You need to be around to pick things up to keep the job going handle issues as they arise and even be there to pay people. Re: Guide me in the right direction 3Apr 27, 2015 9:13 pm I agree with B Star. If planning to be an owner builder and subcontract nearly everything, you need to have a job where you can get away during working hours to meet tradies on site or meet (& pay) for deliveries. Also you need to be able to get time off to make material & equipment selections. Some things can be done over the phone during normal working hours. This tends to suit office workers rather than someone who works outside. Re: Guide me in the right direction 4Apr 27, 2015 9:16 pm I do get every second Monday off, I should add my wife works part time Re: Guide me in the right direction 5Apr 29, 2015 12:18 pm Beetaloo and BStar have nailed it - you need to be on site most of the time, even if it's just to keep an eye on contractors. There were many occasions during our build that it paid off being on site because we were able to pick up on potential problems before they became full blown issues.
