Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Feb 21, 2015 7:55 am Hi all, Just wondering about flashing of sliding doors on a concrete slab. I have a brick rebate around the edge of the slab for 76mm brick, but not a rebate specifically for the door like below. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h228/akapacker/doorsill_zps03f75172.jpg So, the door will sit at the same level as the slab. Just wondering what I need to do for waterproofing. I want to make sure water does not come in between the slab and the bottom of the door. Since I have the brick rebate, water won't pool at the outside of the door and travel through this gap, so it's probably no concern, but thought I'd get people's thoughts. Should I use a bead of sealant between the door and the slab, to block up any gap? Or is there foam or wrap to use. Also, here are some installation instructions for windows and doors: http://www.awa.org.au/documents/item/212 Tyvek also has some comprehensive instructions here: http://www.dupont.com/content/dam/assets/products-and-services/construction-materials/assets/K17933-FlashingGuidelinesBEFORE-10-30-11.pdf Thanks David Re: Window and Door Wrap for waterproofing 2Feb 21, 2015 10:52 am There should have been a sticker on the door frame with the installation details. The instructions for my sliding door required the frame to be fully supported with only about a 10mm overhang, so if the sliding door frame is overhanging the concrete slab by more than this, this gap should be filled with high strength grout (i.e. a strong mix of brickies mortar) and the front raked out about 10mm. I then put terracotta sill tiles tucked under the door frame with a slight slope away from the frame. I cut these tiles down so they just covered the exposed concrete slab. This may be an old fashioned solution. I don't know what other people do. Re: Window and Door Wrap for waterproofing 3Feb 22, 2015 7:06 am Yep, when in doubt, read the instructions. Here they are: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h228/akapacker/DoorSillDetails_zps4d720dd1.jpg Also, found some standards from California, which might be of interest. http://www.consol.ws/builder-resources/sliding-glass-door-install.php Re: Window and Door Wrap for waterproofing 4Feb 22, 2015 7:47 am I did initially have an issue with one sliding door frame. I should have put temporary builders wedges under the frames immediately as the frames were being stood up. I didn't do this. When installing the steel lintels, one of the lintels accidently rested on top of the door frame whilst putting shims under the ends of the lintel (to lift the lintel clear of the top on the door frame) This caused the door frame to twist. I couldn't fix it and had to get the manufacturer to come out and straighten the frame. He also gave me a lecture on reading instructions first. In the great tradition of building in Australia, that is the last thing you do! Quote: This may be an old fashioned solution. I don't know what other people do. That's pretty much how we used to do it too Beetaloo although we used to rebate the concrete slab to lower the step up 'n over of the aluminium upstand as much as possible. I hate seeing external doors where you have to step over a sill that is 50mm or more sticking up above the finished internal floor level. You do have to make sure you know what floor coverings are going inside though. On the outside if it was a timber deck we used to run the decking in and under that last part of the aluminium sill as well rather than keeping the decking flush with the outside wall and then having a tiled sill. Stewie Re: Window and Door Wrap for waterproofing 6Feb 23, 2015 9:39 pm Thanks Stewie. All makes sense. I was going to get a rebate put into the slab for the doors, so I could avoid a step to the inside floor covering, but the sill is only 37mm high, and with timber floorboards, it would make it negligible. Was debating over it for a long time though! Also Stewie, could you tell me, do you install the windows and doors after the house has been wrapped up in sisalation? And, did you use any sill and head flashing at your windows, or you didn't need it in your situation? Thanks for your help! David Screed is installed before or after, what was not up to code?
