Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum Re: OB Project - 222May 06, 2016 8:06 pm kasra nedlands Hey Keffuful, we chose the Bradford gold for external wall. Our walls provide 14cm cavity so we went with two 70mm batts to give 140mm. Ended up with R4.4 Ceilings we are R4.0 And interval walls we are R3.3 soundscreen. Thanks Kasra, was it also Bradford Gold used in the ceiling? I tried to do a price comparison on the Bunnings website but they have limited Bradford stock. May I ask where you sourced yours from? The Bradford website says 'Ask your builder' - I AM the builder! Is there much of a price difference between the external wall cavity insulation and the soundscreen? I know it seems like a good idea but not sure if we can justify the extra cost when it comes to the crunch if it costs heaps more. It looks like you installed the insulation yourself, was it difficult? Any handy hints? Re: OB Project - "New vs Old" - Nedlands, WA 223May 06, 2016 11:18 pm Hey Keffufal, We bought ours from Johns building supplies and pushed their price down. They turned out much cheaper than bunnings. Yes I installed myself with the help of our ceiling fixer. Really easy and no way you can go wrong. Just wear long sleeves, gloves and a mask. I'm no expert in insulation so perhaps someone else can comment on the cost effectiveness of soundscreen. Any insulation will provide acoustic insulation so no need to get too picky. We noticed the effect instantly. We also went with 13mm Gyprock. Re: OB Project - "New vs Old" - Nedlands, WA 224May 08, 2016 5:43 pm Thanks very much for the info, Kasra. Re: OB Project - "New vs Old" - Nedlands, WA 225May 09, 2016 12:57 pm Hi kasra, I have been enjoying watching your project online. I have a similar project on the horizon; renovation/extension of California Bungalow on a slightly sloping front to back block. I really like the design you have and was wondering who did the design work for you? OB Project - "New vs Old" - Nedlands, WA 226May 09, 2016 7:45 pm Hi Winzam, a retired architect by the name of Roger Hearne worked on the design with us. He was great. No ego and happy to hear all our ideas. We bought the house with the intention to build such a design. Our idea was to have a "sleeper" house where the large extension was not really visable from the front. It's been enjoyable to see people's expression when they walk through the front door. Most people just say "WTF" - not sure that's a good thing. Re: OB Project - "New vs Old" - Nedlands, WA 227May 09, 2016 9:41 pm Its a good thing....it looks fantastic! Love the negative detail with your kitchen cabinets OB Project - "New vs Old" - Nedlands, WA 229May 19, 2016 9:12 pm Not a huge amount of progress this last week. We have had a lot of trades on site but mainly little jobs. Both our steel and aluminium windows/doors are going to slow us down.
Meanwhile here is some progress pics: Our two northern windows are glazed and ready for external Venetian Louvres. Either way we will be kicked out of our rental so it's either get it finished or live in a tent.
Down stairs our master area was white set today. The set is so shiny it will be a shame to paint it. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We are steadily preparing the upstairs for painting. Thanks for your indirect resurrance Re: OB Project - "New vs Old" - Nedlands, WA 234Jun 11, 2016 1:03 am It's been approx two weeks since my last visit. Our site has really slowed down as my ceiling fixer has had to urgently visit his sick dad overseas . I've tried to get bits and pieces done but our site has once again become a ghost town. The good news is that he will be back soon and we shall push ahead. Meanwhile our upper level is almost near completion and we will soon FINALLY remove the internal scaffold. Today our upper ceilings and walls were painted with Tuff Hide. this will act as the primer. Hopefully it will give me the perfect ceiling that I'm after. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I've also been thinking about out kitchen bulkhead. Our island is huge and we require a bulkhead over the top of it to hide both our air con and rangehood. The bulkhead also needs to allow the aircon to vent. Here is what I drew up in sketchup. It will be made of 25mm steel tube with painted aluminium slats which will serve as the aircon diffuser and return air.
