Owner Building on 1800sqm Sanity Intact so far Locked up March 2012 Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 6Nov 11, 2014 7:25 pm On my current owner build I paid $1.00 per brick plus extras. The extras added about another $1.00 per brick. I bought the sand & cement which was trucked in 300km each way. (the brickies requested their favourite sand). Extras included travelling time, installing lintels, installing windows, header courses, brick cutting, ties, sills, piers (including short walls), mitres, lifting bricks over 2.7m high etc. Plus G.S.T. I built a 2 storey house in 1979. The going rate then was $0.16 per brick plus extras. I negotiated $0.20 per brick- no extras. If possible, try to lock in a flat rate for labour, - it keeps things simple and there are no arguments regarding final costs. Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 7Nov 11, 2014 8:05 pm Thanks AKB, Lynny-Jane and Beetaloo. Ive had 2 quotes being 1.30 per brick which included nothing else and $1.60 per brick which included everything. My problem atm is cant get anyone out to do the job. Busy time of year unfortunately. Looks like i could be waiting till early next year. Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 10Apr 18, 2015 4:14 pm Joker i paid $1 per brick just 6 months ago, bricky was excellent and had university teachers and students learning from himself. I hope that meant TAFE teachers and their students? Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 11Apr 23, 2015 7:38 pm I paid 80c a brick 3 months ago a referral through a mate. 2 storey double brick face brick all outside. I supplied sand and cement. no extra charges for bricking up lintels, front fence etc, same rate. Price also depends on whether you're paying cash. I think $1 a brick is still easily achievable these days Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 12Apr 25, 2015 8:04 pm About $1 per brick is about right. Add sand and cement on top as well. It does depend on the size of the job. If too small you end up paying a day rate. There are also separate rates for brick sills and lintel install. Hope this is helpful. Chris Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 13Apr 28, 2015 9:55 am You guys need to say where you building to get those rates. There is a big difference in labour costs from somewhere like rural Tasmania or FNQ to central Melbourne or where we are on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. I know a guy who was tiling here in Sydney getting $30 per sqm then when he moved to Townsville it dropped to $18. Brickies rates would be comparable I'm sure. Stewie Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 14May 17, 2015 4:29 pm Brickies rates have gone through the roof over the last 12 months. There is a serious shortage of brickies. The way I see it is it is an old mans trade and they just can't attract young people to take it up. Since the industry picked up 18months ago (after being flat for about 5 years) I'm guessing those brickies close to retirement never came back. Even the big builders can't tie them down for $1 a brick anymore. They did have them down to 80cents a few years back. I've had general chit chat to training organisations and associations about this and they see it as a big problem. I've also spoken to brickies and they have given up on trying to find extra trowel hands as there is simply not enough. plus the hourly rates they have to pay them to stick around is getting crazy Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 15May 17, 2015 6:35 pm Isn't this the Owner Builders Forum? So, lay them yourself. I did a 6 week TAFE course, night classes. I learnt the basic technical stuff and techniques, got in some practical work and then went ahead and did my own bricklaying. I had access to the lecturer during the build so I could ask specific questions if required. Sure, I'm not fast and I'm never going to be doing it for a living but I do know that the job was done well and I know it will not fall down in my lifetime. The satisfaction can't be beaten... nor can the price. Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 16May 17, 2015 7:47 pm Being an owner builder doesn't always have to mean you do all the trades yourself. It's about having control over your own build. We will be doing most of the build ourselves and hiring select others. For us it's about knowing our limitations and being prepared to pay for those jobs that you can't do due to time or knowledge. I'm sure many of us would happily give a brick fence or BBQ a go but with a full time job and no prior history of bricklaying I think we will give it a miss laying our 25,000 bricks. Kudos to you if you have the time and knowledge to do so. Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 17May 27, 2015 8:23 pm I owner built with a project manager and used all his trades, turned out brilliant quality and even with his fee I reckon I saved at least 100, 000, maybe 150, 000; I run a small business and did lots of research and best of all had full control, trades were all of the highest quality. Re: Brick layer Costs and Fees 18May 28, 2015 9:12 am I have to agree 33amc. On the Northern Beaches with house prices going nuts there is obviously a glut of reno work and additions for local builders. Some of the guys I've spoken to over the last 6 months or so have said that getting brickies is the hardest trade of all to line up for a job. One guy gets his retired father in law ( 72 ) who lives on the central coast to come down and stay with him for the duration of one of his jobs. He said he's no longer fast but he does a good job which is all he's after.
