Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Oct 17, 2014 12:18 pm Hi, just wanted to check your views on DIY internal plastering. so far we did the footing, slab and roof plumbing on our own (we had professionals doing our brickwork and roof frame) and it went good (apart from a bit of struggle with connecting roll top ridge caps at 90dg angle!! uhhh nightmare) Anyway we are now ready to do our walls and thinking of maybe trying one wall and see how we go... any thoughts?? Have anyone tried doing plastering on your own?? Would be great to hear the good and the not-so-good stories so we know what to expect Many thanks Re: DIY internal plastering 2Oct 17, 2014 5:08 pm it really depends on if you have any time restraints, depending on the size of your house a couple of experienced plasterers will be done in 2-3 days and you will get a good finish. the problem with doing it your self is over filling or under filling joints both will look like poo once painted. but, if you have plenty of time do a small room first, then put a coat of paint on and see what it looks like before going any further. Re: DIY internal plastering 4Oct 17, 2014 6:37 pm To date I have rendered 2 rooms. The first room I used plasterers sand, lime and cement. It was a disaster. Most of the mortar ended up on the floor. It took forever to finish the room as I kept quitting and leaving it for a few week before starting again. I did eventually finish and am pleased with the result (I applied a bagged finish to create a rustic look). I borrowed the tools from a retired plasterer. In the second room I used premixed bagged render. This went on like a dream. It stuck to the wall and did not slide down onto the floor. I applied two coats in two nights. The down side is that buying bagged premixed render is very expensive if one is to render a whole house. I have looked at your build. You are building a large house. I would get quotes to get a professional plasterer for a large house. Having said that I am planning to plaster my own build. Re: DIY internal plastering 5Oct 17, 2014 8:04 pm Beetaloo I have looked at your build. You are building a large house. I would get quotes to get a professional plasterer for a large house. I did all the plastering on my HT room at the old house, but in the new home I'll be getting the pro's to do it, as I'm just not confident enough to square set myself as I've only used cornice before. Quotes vary, but on my build (233 sq m) I was told to look at around $14000, which is what it's going to cost me. I really don't have the time to do it myself, as I just want to get out of this rental back in to a home of my own. So figure letting the pro's do it, I will have it done in less than a week, and then I can get on to other things. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Shop round there's a few different ones available, the bigger paint suppliers have one as well as bunnings. Look on youtube for some tips, same as with plastering do a small wall until you get the hang of it. I'd even mix up a small amount, trowel it on and then scrape it back onto your hawk and put it back on again. Its a bit of a knack getting it from the hawk to the trowel and on the wall without dropping half of it but once you work it out its not too hard. If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8306 Assuming the structure of your cabinetry is good then I would DIY everything as follows: - replace your counter tops entirely, - replace all drawer runners with soft close… 1 4782 |
