When installing new joists for extension, how much lap is needed to go past the old joists, or do they just need full bearing support over the width of bearer ? Thanks in advance. Wobbly Design from top down to ground , build from ground up Re: Joists , new too old ? 3Jul 16, 2014 8:54 am The main thing is that the new joist has bearing over the full width of the bearer. If you are going to tie the new joists to the old then sufficient lap should be allowed for nailing or bolting the two together which I think is 1 1/2 the width of the timber so 50mm joists = 75mm lap both ways which means lap the timber 150mm. If you are buying the joists at set lengths then just let them run past whatever is left over once you have trimmed the important other end.
