Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jun 24, 2014 8:13 pm Hi all, I am getting the footing poured tomorrow. Can the internal and external brick both sit on the footing then i just slab the middle. This is how it is in the UK. Seems over here that the internal bricks sit on the slab which sits on the footing and only the external bricks sit on the footing. Does it matter which? cheers Mitch. Re: Load baring internal bricks on footing or slab? 2Jun 24, 2014 9:08 pm your opening yourself up to moisture issues there bud. There are a few reasons why we do it this way and if your pouring footings you should have already found out why its done like this. In saying that it may help to know what you are building to establish better grounds for comment? Re: Load baring internal bricks on footing or slab? 3Jun 24, 2014 9:45 pm Hi there, converting a carport into a activity room. moisture problem? under the new slab and on top of the footings will be the DPM. Wonder why they put both external and internal bricks on top of the footing only in the UK? would have thought there would be more moisture over there? As for finding out this before hand, i have had many people tell me different answers and it is only the footing so can still go either way here!! The slab edge needs to be waterproofed and this combined with the cavity will ensure moisture can't transfer from the external leaf through to the internal leaf where the resultant damage can occur. It should be easy to find a detail on this if you need one.w Pouring the slab internally also creates easier access for termites between the brickwork and the concrete. Can you see your existing footing/slab setup? Is it 2c set down? Re: Load baring internal bricks on footing or slab? 5Jun 25, 2014 9:09 am yes m8, i can see the existing slab. I am drilling in some rebar into this today between new footing and existing slab. Will pour the footings today and have a think. cheers ..
