Made me think about my journey to happen soon enough too, would love to build a home with containers, my brother and dad a good with steel and welding so could help us out for sure. My only concern is our council, they can be jerks with alternative builds. Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 162May 12, 2016 10:01 pm Reading the AS rules on nailing I can't believe how many variables come into play when simply wanting to nail one bit of wood to another!! (Interior or exterior/what type of wood/what is wind rating/what type of join/treated or untreated wood/hand or machine nailed etc ad nauseum!!)
I want to nail by hand the noggins between my deck joists - is end nailing and 2 nails good enough as in the diagram? (Or should they be skew nailed?) And would 75mm nails be long enough or should they be longer? What's the best method? (Joists are 2400 long) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 163May 13, 2016 9:11 am I the noggins are only there to prevent twisting of the joists (not to carry and load) then end nailing would be ok. If end nailing through 45mm timber either use 75mm nails and punch down deep or 90mm nails left flush. Hand nailing is not that easy as the timber must be firmly restrained whilst hammering away otherwise the timber will move. Skew nailing is better as the nail is not parallel to the end grain. If end nailing still try to nail at an angle (don't nail at a perfect 90deg to the end grain) Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 166May 14, 2016 8:21 pm LOL - I know I should have finished the noggins today.
But on the way to my land I stopped to shovel 12 large chaff bags of manure from the trotting track for the veggie garden, then I had to unload it, water the veggies, pick the nasty caterpillars off the baby broccoli plants, re-install the generator battery which had gone flat and had to be recharged at home (and why oh why are these things made so difficult to get back in place??) and then finish off the last two joists which needed to be fixed differently than all of the others. (The piece of the bearer overhanging the pier in the right hand pic below has been left as I may need to add one more joist once I work out how thick the external insulated wall cladding will be.) Didn't get all of these done until about half two so then I took a chair and sat on my jetty and had lunch and several cups of tea relishing the perfect sunny day and thinking how lucky I am to have my very own piece of paradise!! Noggins tomorrow!! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So as not to end up with a small step down onto the deck from inside I think I will need to raise the decking board level around 30-40mm (haven't worked out exact measurement yet) so am thinking of putting a layer of battens perpendicular to the joists which will then make the decking timbers at right angle to the walls. I quite like the look of them like this - any reasons why they shouldn't go that way? I assumed that the set out marks for the posts were for the centre of the posts instead they were for the edge of the posts. I had to cut off the holding down bolts and move the posts 40mm. I then noticed that I had transposed the measurements of the beam (a one instead of a zero) which equated to a 100mm error. Half a day spent with the angle grinder correcting my mistakes. I did not have a cup of tea but something stronger. Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 170May 14, 2016 11:14 pm Great to see all the fabrication and sketchup work. I will definitely be keeping an eye on your build! Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 172May 15, 2016 10:25 am Mine don't handle it particularly well either - I just leave it running for a day or two at a time! Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 173May 15, 2016 11:35 am Quote: Thanks SileNceR - I'd love to be able to do the rendering you do (great work BTW) but I don't think my antiquated graphics card and processor would handle it! Your computer would but the rendering times are just a lot longer as SNR says. I should know as I use an ancient 2002 mac and a 2004 CAD program. I've done some nice renderings but they take anywhere from two minutes to two hours depending on the lighting. Stewie Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 175Jul 24, 2016 8:57 am Vvvvvvvery slowly SileNceR!! Have been inundated with work (good for boosting the bank balance) going back to casual teaching. Was looking forward to 2 solid weeks of building work during the recent school holiday.
Then it was a litany of minor disasters - first day of hols generator battery died. Took home charged it, second day just started work predrilling and snapped a drill bit (attaching waling plates into top steel girder) thinking I had several - nope last one, third day start work (armed with 2 x 10 pack drill bits), 3 hours into it and I fall off a ladder and screw up my knee. 4 days off, hobble back to work and generator is dead again again. Next day buy new battery and generator will not work. Next day buy new generator.*** I've invented a whole new range of swear words. Knee is still sore but took last week off from teaching and today will put up the last 6 (of 32 total) waling plates. Do I have to use joist hangers on every one? (Even the ones that are double nailed and will also sit on the wall frame top plate???) They only need to support themselves and a sheet of gyprock. I've informed school I am now only available for work Mondays to Wednesdays. Now at least I will have 4 straight days each week to work on the build. Roof trusses are on order and before they arrive I have to attach bottom plates on the roof of the containers for the trusses to be fixed to. As the internal wall frames go up I can also begin putting in the windows and doors that I've had stored for the past year or so! (***it's an 80km return trip from my land to the nearest hardware store - just enough to not want to do it to buy drill bits! On those 'failed' days there was still many other things to do such as weed spraying etc - and the veggie garden still needs constant maintenance.) Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 176Jul 24, 2016 10:31 am You need to make friends with some farmers near your land - at least that way there's a chance you could borrow something like a drill bit and replace next time you go in to town Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 177Jul 24, 2016 10:43 am Quote: I intend to use 90x45 @ 600 centres. I would run at least one timber batten across the top of the joists (at mid span), or 2 battens at 1/3 span depending on the span of the ceiling joists. This is to help restrain the joists from twisting. Quote: it's an 80km return trip from my land to the nearest hardware store During my build it was a 320km return trip from the nearest decent building supplier (after the local hardware store went out of business) so I always had a couple of projects on the go. When I ran out of materials on one project, I moved onto another. Re: Tondelver House - Southern Highlands 178Jul 24, 2016 9:37 pm Sorry to hear about all the mishaps!
