The joins are not perfect, but when viewed from the ground with my eyes they look acceptable Owner Build in Southern Flinders Rangesd - Rendering Finishe 124Feb 23, 2015 9:39 pm Its been a month since I have been able to go to my build. I was planning to finish painting but it turned out to be a 40 degree weekend.
I did not want to waste a trip so I looked around for some other inside tasks to do. I decided to try rendering the remaining brick walls using only my left arm (I had strained my right arm on a previous trip). The results surprised me. I did a better job using my left arm. I have now finished rendering all the brick walls. One more task completed, lots more to go. Excuse the mess in the photo but I have set up all my tools inside the living room to avoid having to go outside in the heat. Perhaps you were meant to be left-handed! Owner Build in Southern Flinders Ranges- Rendering Finished 126Feb 24, 2015 8:41 pm Quote: and the view is magnificent I am very pleased with the view. When I bought the property it had been grazed and was barren except in gullies. This building site is on the spur of a hill and was exposed and in clear view of the road. I contemplated building in a gully to get some privacy but no views. Instead I planted 3000 trees and bushes between my proposed building site and the road. These trees are now what you see in the photo. They screen me from the distant road, provide nice views and remind me of the work I did in revegetating this part of my property. The trees and bushes have now attracted a large resident population and variety of bird life. There is a saying that the best time to plant a tree is 10 years ago. I am glad that I planted when I did, long before building rather than wait till after building. The mature trees are now self seeding so I also now have a source of free firewood. Owner Build in Southern Flinders Ranges- Rendering Finished 127Feb 26, 2015 7:23 pm I am also pleased with the effectiveness of my solar passive design. It was 40 degrees each day last weekend and the inside of the house only got up to 28 deg. In the evenings I opened all the windows and external doors to allow the house to cool down overnight and in the mornings I closed the house up. Re: Owner Build in Southern Flinders Ranges- Rendering Finis 128Feb 27, 2015 7:46 am Well done on the left handed rendering and the success of the passive design. Passive solar heating seems like such a simple, common sense idea it is astounding it wasn't nationally adopted decades ago. Unfortunately in modern estates, house positions seem to be dictated by the estate division and houses have to be squeezed into the narrow rectangle given to them. What a shame developers do not plan their estate sub divisions with solar passive principles in mind. By aligning new streets during the planning stage they could give everyone a better opportunity to build according to where the sun is! (Or perhaps they do now? Anybody know if this is the case?) Terry, Whilst I agree that solar passive design is not always practical in new housing estates (unless one buys land during the first release), what upsets me is expensive homes being built on acreages that totally ignore solar passive design principals. When I planned my own house I had a choice to: (a) maximise the views and face the house west; or (b) Maximise the solar passive design ( to face the house north) and physically change the views. I chose (b), and planted thousands of trees and bushes north of my proposed build and installed large rainwater tanks west of my house to provide shading/solar screening to the western wall of the house during summer. I am very satisfied with the performance of my house in mid summer. The next test will be how the house performs next winter. Owner Build in Southern Flinders Ranges-Floating Floor 130Mar 05, 2015 9:12 pm Whilst it was still too hot to paint I decided to try laying a floating floor. I had never done this before.
It looked so easy on the demonstration video, just push the boards together until they "click". I found it was not that simple. It took me several hours of laying a several rows of boards and then pulling them up because they were not perfect until I got the "knack". I then progressed fairly quickly and finished the floor in time for a well earned drink. The second bedroom is now nearly finished apart from completing the skirtings and installing a door. My rendered walls soaked up 25 litres of wall paint.
With the ceiling painted I have started to hang some light fittings. Next task is floor tiling. I am not looking forward to this as it is a finishing task and I cannot hide my mistakes. Owner Build in Southern Flinders Ranges- Back to Tiling 139Apr 27, 2015 7:20 pm I took some time off work at Easter to focus on tiling.
I have now finished tiling all the living areas except for sealing the grout. (floor was not grouted or tiles cleaned when these photos were taken) After spending nearly 2 weeks on my hands and knees I now have to learn to walk like a biped again. I had to return the tile cutter to its rightful owner so I might move on to installing another floating floor. I bought a wood heater but have to work out how to get it to site and unload it. I only have a couple of 2 door hatchbacks. May need to get a local neighbour with a tractor and hay forks to unload it.
