That's awesome, well done guys!

This was just a trial run to build up some skills and try out some ideas. Sure, there has been hard work but the reward has been satisfaction and pride, not to mention that we now have this amazing workspace. We could not have achieved this result by commissioning a building company. The end result for us is far more than what you see on the ground. We will be doing this again. That's awesome, well done guys! Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 222Jan 08, 2015 9:44 pm Beetaloo Looks great, maybe you could post it on Kitchen Corner, Give some people ideas instead of only using Ceasarstone and 2 pack. Love this thread for several reasons beyond the obvious Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 223Jan 09, 2015 6:07 pm We've finished constructing the set of drawers along the back wall. Seven meters long, just over a meter tall with 45 drawers. http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/Drawers_zpsefe70696.jpg Since taking this picture we've fitted the top. But we still have to stain the pine and fit handles. We're experimenting with various mixtures of rust and tea leaves to highlight the grain and give it a richer colour. Recycled pallet timber of course. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 226Jan 16, 2015 8:18 am The set of drawers is all done. We made up our own stain from stuff in the pantry and it seems to have achieved the effect we were after. http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/Finished_zps740e37c5.jpg We also made up this workbench on lockable wheels. Should be handy when you need that extra bit of workspace. http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/Mobilebench_zpsb38666b6.jpg We came across this enormous marble conference table. It was in poor condition but it was "free". The catch was that we had to remove it. We had to partly dismantle a wall at its original location and enlist an extra two strong bodies willing to also but their backs on the line. Each leg is 40kg on its own. The top is 3 metres long. After a bit of work restoring the woodwork it has come up nicely. http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/Marbletable_zps4437234d.jpg I'm not sure if this will be the ideal table for the centre of the room but it certainly makes a statement and should be good for sitting around to work on finer art projects. And hard to resist at that price. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 228Jan 26, 2015 10:00 am The semi passive air conditioning is all done and I'm very impressed at how well it is working. We have four panels like this one, one in each corner. A small pump (using only 10W) circulates water through the panel and natural convection does the rest. I have a few small solar panels I could hook up to provide power for the pump but for now we are using mains power (which by the way is solar powered as we produce excess and feed it into the grid). http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/ACpanel_zpsa41b4273.jpg Combined with the cool-room panel roof and thick mudbrick walls we have a very comfortable building. I'll put a thermometer in there over the next few days and see how it performs as we're expecting 40 degrees till at least mid week. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 229Jan 27, 2015 11:02 am 41 degrees yesterday and the inside temperature peaked at 27. Very nice. And we expect that once we fit the roof vents that performance will improve further. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 230Feb 01, 2015 12:44 pm We've been working on odd jobs around the site. Tidying up left over stone, logs etc. And the rails on the front steps. http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/Stepsrailing_zpsc881e579.jpg Roof vents http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/Roofvents_zpsac75bbb2.jpg Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 231Feb 01, 2015 1:13 pm Your studio looks great. I like your attention to detail and finishing everything 100%. The steps look interesting. From the photo they appear to be finished with some sort of tiles. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 232Feb 13, 2015 11:21 pm Place is looking fantastic, well done, lots of energy and effort have gone into it and it shows. Love the recycled pallet work, great textures and forms, very nice, great level of finish, just shows what can be done with imagination and a heap of bloody hard work, love it, so well done !! It makes up nearly the whole wall. 4 meters long by 1.7m high. It will have 32 panes of glass. The centre 8 panes will be on a swivelling frame so that we can let a breeze through if required. http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/Bigoutsidewindow_zpsa362fe26.jpg We've been collecting free windows and glass when ever we see some. We'll cut our own glass panes from this collection and install them once the frame is in place. Its good to see your still working on your studio build and finding innovative ways to recycle materials into your studio and workshop. I hadn't seen a post for a while and was concerned you might have been sick or worse - lost interest in your build. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 236Feb 17, 2015 8:36 am It would take more than sickness to keep us away from the build. We've been moving in, setting up tools, workbenches, filling up those drawers etc... Stewie, the big window will sit atop a mudbrick wall 1.2m high, so well above safety glass limits. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 237Feb 20, 2015 9:52 pm The big windows frame is now finished and we got it installed just before dark. Really pleased at how well the opening mechanism works. http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/Bigwindowframe_zpsc1a5a0b4.jpg We've cut all the glass already so tomorrow we'll start fitting it. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 238Feb 21, 2015 11:04 pm We built another small stone wall just out from the front retaining wall to create a garden bed and now we have planted some hardy drought tolerant agave and then made some "flowers" and planted them. http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/s493/RuffTuff2/Frontgardenbed_zps66704307.jpg Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 239Feb 22, 2015 8:42 am Quote: Stewie, the big window will sit atop a mudbrick wall 1.2m high, so well above safety glass limits. I knew you'd have it covered ! I love the tilt mechanism too. Stewie Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 240Feb 22, 2015 7:39 pm Window frame looks very good. The top section is raking to match the ceiling and you have had to cut around the beam. It its relatively straightforward to make a rectangular wall but an irregular wall is trickly to set out. (I know, I have raking walls on my build) How are you going to fix the glass to the steel frame? I would suggest you simply go and talk to council about your proposal, most councils are getting onboard with ancillary dwellings.
