Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 62Jul 06, 2014 1:50 pm Yesterday was "wasted" working all day so today we made an early start. This is that log we are carting away in the picture at the end of the first page of this blog. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ But after three hours rain stopped play. We have made a start... only 18 more to go. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 63Jul 06, 2014 3:09 pm That's great, can really see it starting to take shape now! Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 64Jul 06, 2014 8:13 pm Wow, I am going to follow your progress, can't wait to see more pictures. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 65Jul 09, 2014 3:22 pm Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 66Jul 10, 2014 12:12 am Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 67Jul 10, 2014 12:36 am The thickness of the poles makes it look very sturdy and grounded, looking forward to the next pics. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 68Jul 10, 2014 8:59 am Some of the poles are more than 500mm in diameter, they had to be sawn from both sides as the chainsaw wasn't big enough to cut through in one go. All the poles come from the trees that were originally on the site..... a fitting tribute to their sacrifice. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 69Jul 10, 2014 9:41 am Looks so beautiful - I am curious as to how you are attaching the poles to the ground? Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 70Jul 10, 2014 5:04 pm We have set a steel stirrup into a concrete footing (600x600x 450mm deep) and the pole is bolted to the stirrup. Other stirrups are cast into the slab. This way the termites have to cross the concrete footing to get to the timber and we are more likely to see them. I used the same system on the house and in 25 years we only had one minor termite attack even though we use no toxic chemical barrier. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 71Jul 11, 2014 7:55 pm All the poles are now up and we've made a start on the beams, a really satisfying afternoons' work. I need an extra long M10 drill bit for steel so we'll need to make a trip down to the big smoke in the morning. We'll collect a load of pallets at the same time. The pallets are for the next project....but that's another story. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 73Jul 13, 2014 9:05 pm Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 74Jul 14, 2014 11:03 am I would love to see close-up photos of the bottom and tops of the poles, just so I can get my head around the methods of attachment (I can't wait to start building sheds on my place - nothing this big though!) Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 75Jul 15, 2014 11:11 pm These stirrups are 300mm long, I have set them in a concrete footing. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Then I cut out a section of the pole to give a flat solid face to bolt to the stirrup. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Then notch out the top of the pole to also give a flat solid face to bolt the beam to. In this case the beams are tilted to be perpendicular to the sloping roof. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Then the beams are bolted to the top of the post. It doesn't matter if they are not perfectly straight... all the bottoms can be lined up and all the tops can be lined up and if they have knobbles, branches and curves in between that just adds character. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 76Jul 16, 2014 11:21 am Thank you very much, that is fascinating! Everyone keeps telling me that the trees on my place aren't good for anything except firewood, I'm glad there is someone else out there that sees their potential! Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 77Jul 27, 2014 6:57 pm Anyone who thinks my building techniques are a bit rough should see how it's done in third world countries. We've just spent 9 days in east Java and it's amazing to see how much can be achieved with so little. Sure, labour is cheap and the final product isn't going to meet Australian standards but this was in a city of 8 million mostly housed in such concrete structures. Just an interesting comparison. Re: Studio (fancy shed) build 79Jul 29, 2014 2:25 pm That's a real beauty! O.H & ?? what? We stayed in and around Malang with relatives.
