Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum Re: 39 sq double storey home - number of bricks? 2Apr 09, 2014 4:21 pm Its time to do a little math and work it out, why guess it and end up with $1k worth or extra bricks on site or be half a pallet short. If you work on 50 bricks per sqm you should be able to do a fairly accurate takeoff. Theres a pretty fool proof way to do it. Sit down with the plan and calculate the wall height from the footing on a conventinal slab or 100mm below slab on a waffle slab to the top of upper wall. If you have eaves take off 300mm, now go to your plan and work your way around the house, multiply the wall length by the height you have. As you do a wall mark it off so you know its done. Work out the entire external wall area of your house, this will include windows and doors. Now go around both levels and work out window and door area and subtract it from he total wall area. You need to work out sill brick numbers, add together the width of all windows and doors then divide by 86mm, add that to your total above. Allow for piers, a 350x350 pier will use 46 bricks per metre, a 450x450 pier will use 70 bricks per metre. Once you have a total number write it down, this is the what you pay the brick layer on. Add 5% waste to this number and this is what you order to site. Thers no standard answer based on house size, window/door size and numbers can change the total by huge numbers. Hope that helps. Re: 39 sq double storey home - number of bricks? 6Apr 10, 2014 1:06 pm Don't forget to take into account window openings, doorways etc. They wont have bricks in them so you have to allow for the m2 area of those. Also you need to order different bricks for different areas such as 3 courses of Longreach above all doors and windows to prevent cracking. Possibly Solids in some area under Window sills etc. If you send your plans to your preferred Brick supplier they will accurately do the brick quantities for you for a small fee (From memory less than $100) Well worth it and certainly a far better option than guessing https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Re: 39 sq double storey home - number of bricks? 7Apr 10, 2014 7:05 pm docker_rob Don't forget to take into account window openings, doorways etc. They wont have bricks in them so you have to allow for the m2 area of those. It depends on your brickies too - some waste a fair bit more than others. What bricks have you chosen ? Re: 39 sq double storey home - number of bricks? 14Apr 18, 2014 7:10 pm mgilla gav unless your laying them yourself dont even go there, just ensure the price you get from your brickie incluses supplying. Hi, I am in favour of supplying my self as the price is quite inflated if I go through the brickie.... Re: 39 sq double storey home - number of bricks? 15Apr 18, 2014 7:12 pm JB1 Most brickies won't want to supply. Too much risk for them- theft and you not paying. I am concerned about the theft issue, have to take the punt... Might just initially order one pallet, which I believe has around 72 bags of 20kg Blue Circle cement. How's bluecircle, I believe it's by Boral.. So hopefully can't go wrong.. Re: 39 sq double storey home - number of bricks? 16Apr 18, 2014 8:46 pm JB1 Most brickies won't want to supply. Too much risk for them- theft and you not paying. Interesting comment. I'm trying to get some quotes from brickies that include supply of bricks (Boral Winter Gold in double height), and very few come back with a quote or a comment of 'buy them yourself' if they're worried about theft. Personally I would've thought that getting a brickie to supply would be cheaper as surely they buy much larger quantities over a year that we could dream of. You have to supply the lot - bricks, sand, cement, plasticiser, DPC, brick ties etc. The only thing they want to supply is labour.
