Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Apr 07, 2014 12:35 pm Hi We are newbies to the forum and also our first attempt at owner building ! Our plans for a two storey house in the new Amberton estate just outside Yanchep are in with the shire, We are in the process of getting quotes for a slab / polished concrete, My husbands a carpenter so will be doing some of the work plus most of the labouring for other trades, But my question is about owner building insurance, can anyone recommend a company and what I need to make sure is included in the policy, TIA Melissa Re: Owner builder insurance 2Apr 08, 2014 12:44 pm Try FD Beck. Many on here recommend them. I used myself and although never claimed found them good to deal with Main thing to look out for is if you need to extend the policy longer than the original 12 months. These guys allow it fairly easily where some the $$$ to do so gets ridiculous and in many cases 6 months extension costs more than the original policy does. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Re: Owner builder insurance 3Apr 11, 2014 8:57 am Melissa, what actual insurance are you after? if you are building through a builder there is 3 different insurances required when you are an owner builder you do not require indemnity insurance (but if you sell within 7 years you will have to take cover out to cover the 7 years). So I would suggest it's one of the other 2? Re: Owner builder insurance 5May 26, 2014 10:43 pm I've been doing a bit of research on Owner Builder Insurance, and all roads seem to point to AOBIS. FDBeck actually on-sell AOBIS - I was going to use FDBeck, because the recommendations were quite strong on HomeOne, but I thought I would go direct. Buildsafe also on-sell AOBIS. I asked for a quote for $10M public liability, and construction works sum insured of $500k. Here are the estimates: AOBIS 1592 FDBECK 2400 (for the exact same AOBIS quote!!!) CGIB 3132 Buildsafe 1791 (on-sell AOBIS) Bovill/BRIC Can't find my quote! I'll be going with the AOBIS quote. Hope this helps. Thanks David Re: Owner builder insurance 6Jun 17, 2014 4:40 pm Thanks akapacker for your list of quotes, pretty much the most helpful information a person can give! I asked for a couple of quotes but got quite confused, I asked for a quote for a build cost of $60,000, but got one back for $600,000 :O Re: Owner builder insurance 7Jun 18, 2014 2:48 pm Thanks guys for all your help, We had a few problems with planning permission from Wanneroo council, So nearly throw the towel in! But we are back with it now, house is approved and now back on my to do list and insurance is right at the top so I will be checking these out this afternoon Re: Owner builder insurance 8Jul 03, 2014 10:03 pm I am building in Amberton too - what part of Amberton are you building? Check out my blog as it will show you were I am. I am keen to follow other peoples builds. Its really exciting! Good Luck. Re: Owner builder insurance 9Sep 07, 2014 11:53 am Hi all. I am also on the hunt at the moment for owner builder construction insurance. Interested to know from those who have already built, if you had to claim on your insurance, and if so did you have any issues? I've read through quite a few PDS's and i'm just worried about loopholes. No point having insurance if your not covered for what you need if you need it. TIA Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=75302 Re: Owner builder insurance 10Sep 09, 2014 10:04 pm I called AOBIS today, and it seems they do not sell the insurance directly to Owner builders and they referred me to FDBeck and Buildsafe to get the insurance. Anyone get to buy from AOBIS direct? Regards James Hi All, I just wanted to close this topic out with an update. So we ended up agreeing to a number with the insurance company, and after an extensive amount of hand… 8 23405 Hi VK, Think it's worth investing time in an Owner Builder course to equip you with basic knowledge on Australian Building Industry and its regulations.
