Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum Re: Owner building in Jimboomba - Site Inspection 41Oct 01, 2014 1:13 pm Had a interesting site inspection the other morning, and have only just brought the SD card home from the camera to pick it up. There was just one question from this site inspector, :- "Where is this amateur radio tower thingy they said I could climb ?" Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Owner building in Jimboomba 44Oct 01, 2014 9:43 pm The loon bailed up my chippy the other morning at just after 6am, who was only there to drop off some timber to use later in the day, and didn't want to carry it around all day. Carried on like a pork chop about how he wasn't allowed to start work before 6:30am, and proceeded to take photos and abuse the guy for daring to come there that early, even though he clearly explained he was dropping stuff off. When he left she was trying to hide behind her door taking photos. No doubt I'll get another complaint lodged to the council that I'll have to deal with again. Like I don't know what difference it is between me dropping off some timber in to my garage at even 4am, or my chippy dropping off some timber after 6am, there were no tools being used or work being done. Re: Owner building in Jimboomba 45Oct 02, 2014 12:10 am Let them complain. You have nothing to worry about since as you say there were no power tools in use. What would they do if they had a shift worker as a neighbor??? Re: Owner building in Jimboomba 46Oct 02, 2014 9:07 am Treeseachanger Let them complain. You have nothing to worry about since as you say there were no power tools in use. What would they do if they had a shift worker as a neighbor??? Actually I do hope they complain more and more to the council, as then the council will see the complaints for what they are, plain vexatious complaints, and eventually ignore her. Yes, it would be fun to see how they'd handle a shift worker coming in and out at different times of the day and night. I also happened to take a photo of the timber that was left in my garage, so that I have proof that the timber delivered hadn't been touched until after 3pm. Sad that I have to do that, but when you have a neighbour like her, you have to cover your own bum. One of the covenant requirements is that you must after 12 months put in a concrete driveway from the street to the front fence, their driveway has very deep wheel ruts in it, as it has not been concreted (their house went up in May 2011 according to google earth photos). Also, clothes lines must not be visible from the road, yet you can see their one from the road in front and another 200m further up the road. Other neighbours have been breached for things such as a garden shed that was green in colour, and had to be repainted brown, which was almost opposite my neighbours from hell, and who happen to be 'friends' with the covenant people. Read in to that what you like ! I just wish whoever owns the vacant block on the other side of them will start to build soon, as it should divert some of her attention over to them. Re: Owner building in Jimboomba 47Oct 02, 2014 10:39 am I don't envy you and the issues with your neighbour.
I bought my land seven years ago and ever since then, whenever I visit my site, I share a couple or three bottles of champagne with my neighbour. I dread to think what my drinks bill is by now but it has been worth every cent. I also do a little maintenance work for her. To date I have had no issues with her relating to my build and have even been using her electricity and in the early years I used her access track. Nah, they always seem to be home all the time. I did try when I first got there to do the neighbourly thing and went to visit them all to introduce myself and shake hands, but these lot never came to the front door when I knocked, and preferred to stay upstairs on their verandah, mostly out of view. I dare say they advised the covenant people (which from all reports is that they are friends with them, i.e. invite them over for dinner/bbq's) that my amateur radio tower was going to be the size of high tension power line towers, rather than the relatively 'skinny' tower that it really is. I really don't think we're bad neighbours, as we were in the one place for 28 years, and the neighbours now rent their house to us whilst we build. I really doubt they would've rented the house to us let alone at the relatively cheap rate of rent we're paying if we were bad neighbours. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Owner building in Jimboomba 51Oct 02, 2014 11:23 am Beetaloo I bought my land seven years ago and ever since then, whenever I visit my site, I share a couple or three of bottles of champagne with my neighbour. I dread to think what my drinks bill is by now but it has been worth every cent. I also do a little maintenance work for her. I'm pretty much similar to you, I offer to help out the neighbours where I can, and try to work with them whereever possible, but as you can guess that courtesy is never going to pass on to these particular neighbours from me. What they have now successfully done is miss out on the generosity that my 84 year old mum would bless on them. Mum would have doted over their children, and bought them presents at least every Christmas if not birthdays as well. The two dogs they have there mum loves them and thinks they are cute. And of course with the neighbours pregnancy she would've bought her a present for the birth. Now none of that will happen, and mum has told me that she will be civil with her, and if it is not returned she will not bother with them again. For my mum to say what she has said about them to me, is pretty much out of character for her. Anyway, our build will continue, we will move in and enjoy our new home contrary to what those clowns want us to do. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Some people are never happy unless they are making someone else miserable. ???? We had some neighbors here who were renting, every time they went by we'd all wave and smile, they would just stare right through us. What's with that? A smile costs nothing to give and reaps plenty of rewards... Re: Owner building in Jimboomba 54Oct 28, 2014 7:29 pm Well we eventually got our doors delivered and installed a couple of weeks ago, so I went and stained them and put a clear top coat on them, so that the timber would be protected from the expected splashes of mortar for when the bricks went up. Certainly worth the effort, as whilst the bricks were going up the inevitable splash of mortar got on to the doors, but were easily cleaned. The house is now all bricked up, so it's looking more like a home than a building site. It's really starting to come together now. Photos are on my blog site (see below). Right in the middle of confirming quotes for the gyprocking, but it doesn't include the front verandah of the back patio (for you trend-ites alfresco), so I'm getting them to quote for doing that as well. I had been planning on going the cheapskates way and put up FC sheets or similar, but it was mentioned that it does look cheap with the joint strips and screw heads exposed. It is supposedly not much more to gyprock those areas either! About to get a waterproofer/tiler in to quote for the wet areas, but one that I called suggested I wait till the gyprock is up before he comes in to quote. So far I've run 1400m of twin and earth cable through the house, plus all the cat6 and and rg6 cabling pulled through. Solar HW and PV has now also been pre-installed, but won't be putting the panels and ET's and tank until after lockup, and maybe not even until days before we go to move in, as I'm sure there will some who want a 'freebie' from me, and I don't want to make it too easy for them. Re: Owner building in Jimboomba 56Oct 29, 2014 10:28 am qebtel In reference to your neighbour problems, Still happy you downsized? If the rest of the neighbours were like that, I would be rather upset. However the rest of the neighbours seem quite friendly and aren't paranoid about my amateur radio hobby. Only one neighbour mentioned that he would not like my tower if it had a flashing light up the top of it, which it doesn't. Although they did initially knock it back on the grounds that electrical cables crossed the water poly pipes... it's a old rule from the days of copper piping that has never been updated to reflect the change from copper to poly pipe. All that had to be done to pass was to put some flexible conduit around the electrical cables that passed across the poly pipe, which the council inspector viewed then passed it all. Re: Owner building in Jimboomba 57Nov 04, 2014 8:00 pm I agree with your comments about laundry doors, however so many builders do the sliding glass doors as standard (including ours) that at the end of the day for us it was weighing up the cost and keeping other variations which we considered more important in our budget. Each to their own, but glad to see that I'm not the only one who prefers a more regular outside door in the laundry, as it also gives us just that little bit more benchspace. Definately not cb at all... there's quite a divide between the two groups, mostly because of the less honorable few in the cb group. edit: fixed up typo !
