Re: Asbestos help please? 3Jul 02, 2013 12:15 pm When was the house built? Asbestos stopped being made in sheeting in the early 80s. If you can get a look at the reverse unpainted side of a sheet of the stuff, the markings and appearance should be enough for a qualified person to know whether it contains asbestos or not, without resorting to expensive lab tests. Re: Asbestos help please? 4Jul 02, 2013 12:52 pm My sister had some fibro tested for asbestos recently with Parsons Brinckerhoff, it only cost 30-something dollars so not expensive at all. Just dont break it up in a way that fibres can become airborne and breathed in. 1. tape tissue paper over your nostrils with surgical tape, and tie a bandana or some type of cloth around your mouth, tightly. These two measures will stop any possible stray fibres getting into your lungs. You can buy a more expensive mask, but they are very uncomfortable. 2. Take each sheet down whole. You do this by removing the nails, etc usually by breaking the fibro around the nail . Do this slowly , and continually spray with a water bottle and nothing will become airborne. Have a second person spray it as you hit it and break it. 3. Once the sheets are on the ground, throw a hose over them, and break them up by standing on them. You can then put the pieces in small parcels. Ive removed tonnes of the stuff using the above method, no drama whatsoever. Some councils have laws that restrict how much you are allowed to remove, check if you insist on doing it by the book. What you are looking at is fibrous plaster, true gypsum, it is cast on horizontal beds with fibers included to give strength. I has no Asbestos in it. Houses before 1985… 2 7137 4 1834 Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7158 |
