I did both the White card and the owner builder course online. The first was really quick and easy and took about 40 minutes - the second took 2 - 3 hours if you skip all the reading and just use the prompts!! The company I used made it very easy to pass . After I attained my certificate I found it very useful to go back over all of my notes (PDF's) and read them!! They were extremely informative. From memory the white card cost about $40 and the Owner Builder Course was about $190. (If you do the online courses make sure the qualifications are appropriate for your state.) Re: Any one here done the owner builder course? 4May 23, 2013 8:40 am Hi there, cheers.. So when i apply for a an OB license do i need both? a white ticket and the course? Is it best for me to get the plans approved first for my carport conversion then take the course? cheers. Re: Any one here done the owner builder course? 5May 23, 2013 10:33 am You do need both - but I guess if council won't approve your build then doing the course is pointless! But you need to show you have completed the course when you submit your DA. You need the OB licence if your work exceeds $5,000 (at least in NSW). So probably the safest step is to speak to your council first and confirm your development would be acceptable and then do both the courses. Do a search online as there are quite a few companies that offer it - make sure it suits the regulations for your state (I'm not certain whether it is a nationally uniform regulation) - and often you can do both the white card and the OB course with the same company. Re: Any one here done the owner builder course? 6May 23, 2013 7:06 pm First time here, first time building also, are you able to advise name of the company and such who you did the course with. Tks. waxinggibbous I completed mine a few weeks ago. I did both the White card and the owner builder course online. Re: Any one here done the owner builder course? 7May 23, 2013 7:37 pm Hi, When we became owner builders 3 years ago there was no requirement In WA to do an OB course to become an OB. It was really just personal choice if you wanted to do a course for personal information. You could just fill out some forms and pay the fee to the Building Commission and get your OB licence. I'm not sure if it has changed recently though. We did the 2 day course at Home Base expo for our own information and we found it helpful. Our owner-builder journey - viewtopic.php?f=38&t=45187 Re: Any one here done the owner builder course? 8May 24, 2013 1:13 pm We did the home base owner builder's course. I got my owner builder's license in July of last year and you needed to show that you held the knowledge of duties and responsibilities of being a owner builder. Doing the course was the quick way of doing that.
