Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Oct 01, 2012 4:51 pm It's not such a straightforward question but I'm sure most of you clever people will understand what I'm trying to ask. For an addition/alteration how many times have you redrawn your plans and have you got quotes with each redraw? I ask because obviously we need to commit to a final set of drawings but first I want to know if we can afford the dream extension which could add another 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and living area within our altered roof space, or if we should just stick to the cheap and cheerful plan of keeping the current roofline with new kitchen, laundry, family room and deck under a skillion. I'm wanting to use the roof space but until I have drawings I can't ask roof/truss companies for supply quotes. But without the quotes I'm unsure if we can really afford to build this addition. So plan A is for attic conversion with stairs into the roof space etc, which will add almost 50% to our our available space. and plan B is the cheap and cheerful addition on the rear which only adds new living space. I'm very wary of over capitalising and hence my attention to the budget. People make one happy, not houses? I do not think so. Houses are more to be trusted than people. They used a 3rd party drafting company that couldn't follow directions or in some cases draw in a CAD program something I drew on paper and provided to them for some of the components. It will depend on your drafter and how well the builder can communicate what you ask of them. In terms of how many changes did we make to the original plan (the basic one from the builder)?? about 20 I think. When we were looking to extend we got 3 different designs drawn up and probably made 3-5 changes to each of those. We then got rough quotes (Guesses basically) for all 3 and 1 firm quote from 2 builders once we decided on the one we wanted. The 2 quotes came in way over the expected value that would add to the house so we then went with knock-down rebuild. I would never build with Fowler homes. I built with them in 2021 and till date maintenance issues are pending.
