Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Oct 01, 2012 11:40 am Hi, My background is from IT industry, which has nothing to do with construction. I just passed an online course of owner builder, it is so unbelievably easy, so I think I need more training and practice, my question is what should I do now? BTW, I decided to quit IT industry and join this building & construction industry, should I go to take a course of cert 4? Thank you guys. Re: How does a newb home builder practise? 2Oct 01, 2012 1:39 pm Nothing beats practical experience. Anything to do with a residential build will be good info for you. I'd look at seeing if you can do a bit of labouring for a builder or even a brickie for a few weeks and try and pick up as much as you can while getting paid. Even visiting a site where the slab is down and the frames and trusses are up so you can see where all the flashings go, what sort of tie-downs they use, frame bracing etc. Having the qualifications is good but nothing beats hands-on in my opinion. I presume this is for an OB that you are going to be doing in the not so distant future ? How much of it are you going to be doing yourself or are you going to be mostly the project manager ? Stewie Re: How does a newb home builder practise? 3Oct 01, 2012 3:46 pm Thank you, Stewie: I planed to build my own house in next year or after next year. But I must earn some experience before doing that, I think be a project manager is more realistic for me. Anyway, I am tired about design website, considering to get a job in building industry next year, what salary can I get for a junior labor or brickie? Thank you Re: How does a newb home builder practise? 4Oct 01, 2012 4:25 pm Hi lukele Firstly there is some good advice from Stewie D about practical experience however it must be in tandem with education. There is a lot to know you can't pick up from on site practical experience, contracts, regulations, how to read drawings, the list is endless. Just to sober you up this is the list of competencies required for builder registration: Domestic Builder Registration The competencies herewith are specific to the registration category and class of building practitioner, for the purpose of registration with the Building Practitioners Board, under section 170 of the Building Act 1993. Most of the time, what you know is more important than what you do, conversely what you don't know could ruin your good work or cost you a lot. Secondly, building is wonderful but it's tough business and you have to be good at it and constantly improve. It's a great industry to be in and it's well paid, work is hard but healthy and tradies regularly make more than university graduates. With the number of older tradies and builders retiring (like me) there is desperate shortage of new talent and you should never be out of a job.
