The online course was so easy it is a bit ridiculous. I know a little about building from being a builders daughter and having houses built or renovated around me since I was 5yo. I felt confident enough to take on the challenge. If you haven't been exposed to building I would think it would be a bit more difficult but still do-able. Do you want to learn something or just get the 'certificate' do you can apply for OB licence? I would like to learn something about becoming an OB as I'm new to it. I believe in Victoria, I can apply for an OB permit without completing the course. Re: First Time Owner Builder 5Aug 05, 2012 9:11 pm Vess Id suggest doing the classroom course then but that's because I'm that type of learner. I can't do text book or online learning. I need to be hands on with discussion and teacher led learning. Many thanks for your suggestion. Re: First Time Owner Builder 6Aug 06, 2012 10:11 pm We didnt need to do a course to get our OB permit, and I didnt research any of them. I think it may be NSW that offers quite a few online courses. Re: First Time Owner Builder 8Aug 07, 2012 10:38 pm My husband is a cabinet maker by trade but is very "hands on" - he is one of those "fix it, build it" kind of guys. My husband was "Site manager" overseeing exactly what our tradesmen were doing and I was the person organising the quotes, doing the research, budgets etc From the time we scraped our soil to the time we moved in was about 18months - we had anticipated considerably less than this. The most stressful part of it was finding reliable tradesmen - turned out that the people who were "recommended" were the ones who caused us grief. I could easily say that the first recommended plumber delayed work on our home for a total of 4 months before we went elsewhere. We were delayed by our first electrician. Our window manufacturer, whilst more than pleasant to deal with up until our deposit was paid, caused delays of about 6 weeks (even with giving them 8 weeks notice) and also gave us many problems with quality of work and customer service afterwards (I ended up refusing to deal with them and hubby took over. The attitude towards women was disgusting). We found that a lot of our tradies preferred to have sole access to the house as well, which we were happy to do and added to our delays (My husband appreciates that it can be difficult trying to work with other tradies trying to work in the same area of the house) It can be a very stressful process. It can blow out on time and budget. My husband says he would never do it again, but we both love our home. We didnt save money but we got a lot more out of our money. First Time Owner Builder 9Aug 07, 2012 11:50 pm I'm owner building now in Wantirna, so far so good. What area you building in? When you're ready for quotes and I'll give you some contacts. Hopefully by the end I can definitely recommend who I used. I'm doing it to save money and a higher quality finish that what I was quoted from a small builder. Re: First Time Owner Builder 10Nov 14, 2012 9:48 am Hi all, I bought in Ferntree Gully foothills (Melbourne's East) just recently and want to start building as an owner builder. Not sure if i should do a short course or not, but thought to get some prices from a draftsman first to see what kind of costs will be involved in building a house in a high fire risk area. The land is steep and costs will be higher and so i'm told... @JB1 How's the owner building going in Wantirna, moving along nicely? Did you use a local draftsman for your house design, was he good and allowed you to make a lots of changes to your liking etc? Are you happy with the tradies you've so far used, would you recommend them? I too want to save money and have a higher build quality and am willing to do a lot of the work to save. It's coming along nicely, slow, but I am happy with the quality- at lock up. Local draftman, I did change the plans a few times. Now, the best thing about a custom home and owner building is you can change the design of the house during construction as long as it's not structural. Yes, very happy with the trades people from Carpenter, Electrician, Plumber, Drainage Plumber, Roof tiler, Roof Plumber, Renderer, Brick cleaner. Brickies were good and cheap, but wasn't a perfect job (however still very acceptable). Issues. Concreter did a good job, but stodged me out of $600 for pump cost, after we agreed the price would include a pump. Site excavator subcontracted out the truck to take the fill/rubbish to the tip. At the end of the day there was still one more load to cart away, the truck driver went home. The excavator guy wanted to charge me an hourly rate in the morning for his labour + 6 hours min fee for a truck for the last load. I was very unhappy and told him to push the dirt aside and go home. I ended up using a guy with a bob cat to take the last load for $300. He is also good guy. I haven't have any issues with agro tradies or tradies trying to pass substandard work or doing a shifty, so my experience has been very positive. Quality of work so far has been very good. When you're ready to build, let me know and I'll pass you their details. Can anyone give me any onfo on New Homes WA? Good or bad, hopefully good just need to know if my choice was good or not? Thanks ❤️ 0 8933 A quick update, we didn't have site start before Easter. Summit can't seem to give me a day when they are scheduled to begin, so I'm left with a vague "within 10-20… 4 26738 |
