The renderers started work yesterday -- a thin acrylic render with an oxide pigment, designed to weather over time in a fairly rustic fashion. The finish will be quite rough, to give the effect of old bricks that have been bagged over. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I was there when they started the front wall, and my first comment was "It looks very brown". After explaining how it will age over time and change in colour, the renderer eventually realised he'd mixed the brown/black tint ratios up (2 black to 1 brown, not the other way around). Very glad we picked it up before he'd done much more... *** Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 82Jan 17, 2013 2:49 pm Were you near the fires? Good spotting re the brown ! Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 83Jan 17, 2013 3:00 pm kiwi Were you near the fires? No, thank goodness -- Hobart city was a reasonable distance from the fires (although it looks a lot closer on the map!). Fern Tree is a definite candidate for a major bushfire -- not "if", but more likely "when". Hence the Council's stringent bushfire building standards. Interesting article in the paper today, regarding the continued building slump in Tassie: http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2013/01/17/370505_tasmania-news.html. No doubt the fire standards have increased costs dramatically, and as of this year the OH&S requirements have been upped on residential construction to commercial levels. My builder estimates those two factors alone would add $50k-plus to the price of an average home build here. Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 84Jan 17, 2013 3:05 pm Same here...but with earthquake stuff after the chch earthquake. Our build would be 50k more. Lucky we moved in a month after the earthquake in feb 2011 so we don't have to pay all the costs associated with building in an " earthquake" country even though we have always been one and had major earthquakes like Napier etc forever... Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 85Jan 17, 2013 3:44 pm Looking good J!! For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 86Jan 27, 2013 9:17 am Fifty shades of grey The renderers have now finished the oxide coating on the brickwork. I'm intrigued to see how it'll age over time... Word of warning if you're throwing the packs down a slope... they can gather a bit of speed. Some hairy moments as we watched errant packs crash against ladders and scaffolding... What colours are they? Mate, your home theatre is awesome. Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 92Jan 29, 2013 7:58 am MACCATTACK House looks great, the colours look fantastic against the trees. What colours are they? Mac, the render doesn't actually have a colour name... just two parts black to one part brown oxide for each bucket of acrylic render (maybe I should call it "Fern Tree Grey"?). The brown on the weatherboards is Wattyl's "English Castle" and the stain on the cedar windows is Sikken's "Dark Oak". Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 93Feb 04, 2013 12:00 pm Quick update: just got back from the house and the stairs have gone in... but for some odd reason the joiner has made them Jarrah on top of the tread, and Tassie Oak on the face of the tread (??). Seems like there's been wires crossed somewhere, and I'm thinking this may not be a cheap fix... uh oh. Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 94Feb 06, 2013 2:48 pm Now you see it...
Visiting the site today, the errant staircase (mentioned above) has gone missing. I'm assuming it's gone back to the shop to be correctly timbered (Jarrah on both surfaces). I'll be watching the end-of-month bill very closely to see who's picked up the bill... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It's not just those stairs that have issues. The little steps down into the loungeroom were supposed to be recessed -- but I got this instead: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Anyway, one step at a time (hah!). Right now I'm just frustrated at the on-again/off-again tradies. The electrician turned up yesterday (huzzah!) but didn't show up today. The carpenter was due back today to put in a few more studs/noggings... but again, no show. It's very easy to become disenchanted when it seems as if you're the only one interested in the build. One more pic: the fireplace with completed surround and the mantle in place. Once the scratch coat's cured, it'll be time to start applying the Eldorado Stone veneer... I think thats why people dont keep building..cos of them. If midwives were like that, no one would have more than one kid. The most recent fires are on the other side of Mt Wellington, but the plume of smoke does make it look a lot closer than it is (there's currently a lot of smoke in the air *cough*). I intend to defend this house as long as possible, as it's BAL29 fire rated (ie: concrete bunker). The fire station is only 7 doors down the street, and there's road access in all directions. I'll be joining the CFA and should have a good idea of threat level if there is any danger. Hello. I just bought a few acres in Habana, Mackay, and my horses seem to love hanging around under this tree. I would like to name the paddock after this tree. Can… 0 9556 Fellow Perth dweller.
