Yes I will agree to that and coming along nicely but more than that, Johnson is having too much fun building it and that is exactly the way it should be. Agreed! Even though it drives me crazy at times (and sucks my time like nobody's business) it's such a rewarding and fun process. And I reckon I'm enjoying it so much more now that the tradies are gone and I can just potter away myself. Owner/builder is the only way to go! Off now to put the final sealing coat on my tiles, then install the rangehood and top cupboard doors... Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 227Feb 21, 2014 4:15 pm Although out builder was pretty good and i said i would never build again i reckon owner builder would be alright. I could steal my builders contractors and just go about things the way i want and have a chance to do every single little detail i want Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 228Feb 21, 2014 7:18 pm BradS Although out builder was pretty good and i said i would never build again i reckon owner builder would be alright. My two best mates were down from the mainland recently to help me celebrate my birthday, and I managed to wangle some building time out of them (sharing is caring, right?). With some grunt work, we managed to fit the really awkward cupboard above the fridge... although today I put on the doors and discovered they were a little wide (same deal as the linen cupboard upstairs). Back to the kitchen place I go for a trim... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I've started fitting the lift-up cupboard fronts as well. Those lift-up Blum mechanisms are way sexy... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Finally, with the tiling done in the laundry and bathroom, I've been able to install the laundry trough and bring in the copper bath. The plumber should (err... might?) be on-site tomorrow, so I can get both plumbed-in. Today I tried to do a clean up after the electrician and plumber (neither of which are finished, with no ETA on when they'll return). There's plaster dust all over the dark matt walls, the shower head leaks, the hot water cylinder is spraying water everywhere, there's marks all over the ceiling where the lights and fittings have bumped it... ughh, just one of those "blah" days. It's a weird thing, building your own house. There are moments of pure elation when you see things coming together; then there's times of complete frustration or disappointment, when a tradie doesn't show, or something's not done to the standard you were expecting. Certainly a rollercoaster ride... Anyway, let's see what happens this next week. Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 232Mar 09, 2014 11:31 pm "Blum mechanisms are way sexy..." but no mention of that bath?? Hello? That bath, framed view and tiles are pure art. Stunning, unique should make up for any bad day. http://www.housebythewater.wordpress.com From blank block to new home in Mandurah, Western Australia. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65564 Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 233Mar 14, 2014 10:26 am Nice work on the Blum mechanisms (is there a more correct word) and the bath. What tap you having for the bath? For the rest of us, it's good to see you don't have an unlimited budget. If you're going to cut cost anywhere, it should be the laundry Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 235Mar 18, 2014 8:15 pm That bath has made my week, love it!!! Originally I was going to face the back of them with Colourbond, but now I think I'll just undercoat them with tumescent paint, then final coat them the same colour as the dormers. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Bit of a cheats way to do it... I cut some 18mm marine ply to size, then screwed on 12mm hardwood "rails and stiles". With a bit of edge filling and painting, they should look pretty authentic when open. *** Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 238Mar 28, 2014 7:38 pm Wow, very impressive! I've just read all this and it's awesome seeing your dreams come alive. Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 239Mar 30, 2014 10:39 am I just stumbled on your thread through a search for scaffold hire - yikes, it is seriously expensive! However, reading on, the story of your build has been utterly inspirational at a point when I was doubting my ability to manage a series of renovation jobs at my place. I now feel I can get through what needs to be done provided I can be realistic and accept there will be setbacks from time to time, as you experienced. Your house is superb, and I hope you continue to post more photos as the build nears completion. Re: My new house at Fern Tree, Tasmania 240Mar 30, 2014 2:39 pm Thanks Nibbles, and everyone else -- much appreciated! The toughest part of this build is relying on others to do their jobs... that's really the only thing that's given me frustration. Cost is a worry, but I suppose I'd expected that (thank you Grand Designs!). But if trades turned up when they were supposed to and did the job they were supposed to do in a timely manner, it would have been a breeze. It is fun doing stuff yourself, though. Everyone should give it a go at some point, and if you screw up you can always get someone to fix it... eventually. Hello.
