I think the polystyrene cladding is an awesome idea, are you able to tell me how it compares pricewise to brick or hebel cladding? I'm guessing the labour component would be significantly less than brick? Also I'm curious as to how you would go bolting things to the exterior walls ie clothesline, lights etc. Re: Owner build-Kareen Hills..kitchen begins & decking compl 104Sep 16, 2012 5:16 pm Hi Bayview. We had a long look at what cladding we would use, eventually settling on polystyrene. Compared to, Brick - Poly works out cheaper in cost, quicker to build with, with a higher insulation value. This means we did not have to insulate in the walls because of its high R value. The same with concrete blocks. Hebel - still cheaper than hebel and still quicker. The insulation difference is reduced greatly, as hebel is quite efficient, depending on the hebel method use use. ie blocks, the thickness will determine your R value, or panel. The panel is quick as well but you still need to insulate inside. As for speed, poly can be completed (panels, 2 layers base render, colour coat) in 4 days depending on house size of course. As for mounting things. This can be a problem you have to be aware of. Assuming a new build you must plan ahead and have plenty of trimmers in place for things you wish to mount. Not to mention long screws. They obviously have top be longer than the cladding with enough to go into the trimmer. Generally I use 150mm batten screws as the poly is 100mm. Normal outside lighting is not a problem as they are normally very light weight. The likes of a clothesline needs forethought and a trimmer placement. We found that this was the biggest disadvantage of poly that unless you plan ahead is is a bit more difficult. I found the easiest way around this problem is depending on what you wish to mount is simply to place a post, steel (can go smaller) or wood depending on application. So far there really hasn't been anything to cause any great concern. This was a brand new method of cladding for us and so far seems good and at this point, the insulation factor seems really good with the limited time we have experienced it. No doubt will post an update in time to come. Thanks for the info re poly. People look at me funny when I say I reckon my next house is gonna be made of foam. If you didn't tell anyone they wouldn't even know. But you would notice the difference inside, and in your hip pocket. And I like the rendered look so it's a cinch for me. One other question, does the poly screw straight onto the frame or is there some kind of battens underneath? Re: Re: Owner build-Kareen Hills..LOTS happening :) 107Sep 18, 2012 8:25 pm Hi Bayview Some people thought it weird when we first said we were having poly, but since seeing it everyone is impressed. It looks like normal render, only sounds a bit hollow if you happen to tap your knuckles on it. We and our tradies are amazed how well it sounds insulates. We've been there when the wind's been howling outside and you hear nothing. The company that clad us also said we won't need to run our air con/ heating much as it insulates so well....so looking forward to testing this out. The poly cladding doesn't need any battens, it gets screwed directly to the fame, after a breathable plastic membrane (not sisalation - it doesn't breath) is applied first. They use special long screws with a plastic basket/plate on the end.....here's a few pics to give you more of an idea. Our blog has more info too. A much better spot than our temporary one. Will be less obtrusive in our yard once plants are in place and our washing will receive full sun for most of the day. More pics on our updated blog.
